Hogue Insurance Agency will now be known as All-Star Insurance Group and has moved all operations to an office inside Wood County National Bank located at 417 South Main Street in Quitman. "We are excited about adding such an outstanding agency to our company," said Joe Dodd, president of All-Star Insurance Group. “Hogue Insurance Agency has served the Quitman area for more than a quarter century and we plan on continuing to serve their clients in the same personal manner that Hogue Insurance Agency has been doing. Ms. Hogue purchased the agency from Billy White in 1990 after working 3 years at the agency. “The decision to sell our agency was not an easy one to make,” said Mrs. Hogue. “We wanted to be sure the new agency would service our clients in the same manner. We feel confident that All-Star Insurance Group will serve us all well. All-Star Insurance Group, Inc. is a subsidiary of First National Bank of Gilmer, which owns Wood County National Bank of Quitman. Wood County National Bank Location Manager Jeanette Argenbright says the new insurance office provides another piece to the bank’s portfolio of services, “We want to be a one stop shop for our clients by providing banking, financial planning, and insurance services, all under one roof,” said Argenbright. All-Star Insurance has appointed Tonda Tiffee Ward of Quitman as the managing agent for the new office inside Wood County National Bank. Ms. Ward comes to All-Star Insurance after four years with Hogue Insurance Agency. "We are fortunate to have someone with Tonda’s background join our agency," said Dodd. “Tonda will be a great addition to the All-Star Insurance family. Ms. Ward said she is excited about the opportunity to open an office inside the bank. “I feel that having an All-Star Insurance office inside Wood County National Bank will provide clients of both the bank and the insurance agency a real convenience,” said Ms. Ward. “This office will allow customers to take care of both their banking and insurance needs in the same location. This is the sixth insurance office that All-Star has opened inside an area bank, joining locations at First National Bank in Gilmer and Pittsburg and locations at Security State Bank in Diana and Ore City, as well as an office inside Texas American Bank in Mt. Vernon. If approved, the new bike boulevard would run along city streets from Parkade Center on Business Loop 70 West to the MKT Trail entrance near Garth Avenue and Stewart Road. The city's first bike boulevard is on Windsor and East Ash streets. According to a council report, the project is estimated to cost $460,000 and will include the construction of an eight-foot pedway on the north side of Worley Street between Alexander and Banks avenues and accessible ramps, crosswalks, pedestrian signals and raised concrete medians throughout the route to enhance safety. The council had been scheduled to hold a public hearing on the bike boulevard project tomorrow night. In its report, city staff recommended the council approve a motion directing staff to proceed with drafting detailed plans for the project. Chadwick, whose ward encompasses the northern half of the proposed bike boulevard, said project maps were not clearly labeled and the council report incorrectly states that Aldeah Avenue connects to Worley Street. North of Broadway, Aldeah becomes Alexander, which connects to Worley. "We needed to clearly label the map and update the report," Chadwick said. She said she is "highly supportive" of the project and that feedback from residents gathered at interested parties meetings has been generally supportive. Steve Sapp, a spokesman for the city's Public Works Department, said the public hearing on the project likely would be moved to one of the council's two regular meetings next month. The results are in and the winners of the Most Cost-Efficient Primary Election Victor award — an award I just made up — are Carol Ammons, Pat Quinn (sorta) and Jim Oberweis (for real). An electoral candidate gets this prestigious award by a) winning the primary and b) spending as little money as possible. The first hurdle is important because otherwise this year's award-winners would have been 13th Congressional District Republican Michael Firsching, who got 2,145 votes without spending any money. (At least he didn't report any spending to the Federal Election Commission). Other cost-efficient losers were Tio Hardiman, the Democrat who got 123,078 votes against Quinn (34 cents for each vote); Doug Truax, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate against Oberweis ($1.16 for each of his 326,948 votes); 13th District Democrat David Green ($1.83 for each of 4,431 votes); Republican gubernatorial candidate Kirk Dillard ($7.92 for each of his 302,035 votes); and 13th District Republican Erika Harold ($12.43 for each of the 20,921 votes she got). The two least cost-efficient losers — a real double whammy — were 13th District Democrat George Gollin of Champaign ($50.05 for each of his 9,908 votes) and Democratic Illinois House candidate Sam Rosenberg of Champaign ($51.55 for each of the 2,511 votes he received). On the other hand Bruce Rauner and Rodney Davis won, but they spent a lot of money doing it. Rauner spent $47.16 per vote ($15.24 million for 323,296 votes) and Davis spent $43.40 ($1.205 million for 27,773 votes). The winners, therefore, are Democratic Illinois House nominee Ammons of Urbana (who unlike Quinn and Oberweis had a legitimate opponent who outspent her) who spent $14.23 for each vote she got; Democratic Gov. Quinn ($4.68 per vote) and Republican U.S. Senate nominee Oberweis ($1.47 per vote). The latter is significant because Oberweis had a reputation for wildly spending and losing anyway. In the 2006 Republican gubernatorial primary, for example, he spent $15.64 per vote. There's a chance the old Oberweis could return this year when he takes on Democrat Dick Durbin, a race he has said will require millions of dollars. An early poll shows Durbin with a 24 percentage point lead. The Yes for Independent Maps group — the remarkably well-funded organization that is pushing for a state constitutional amendment that would allow for an independent citizens' redistricting commission to draw state legislative district boundaries — reported spending $1.285 million in the January through March quarter. Of that sum an equally remarkable $1.062 million went to NW Democracy, a Portland, Ore. Michael Kolenc, manager of the Yes for Independent Maps group, said the petition-passers are not paid for each signature they get. "They are paid $14 an hour if they work over 30 hours a week. Petition gatherers are staff and not contractors and are trained on a daily basis," Kolenc said in an emailed response to questions. "They report to one of our four offices in Chicago, the collar counties or Rockford. In Champaign County, though, a corps of volunteers has gathered more than 12,000 signatures on "Yes" petitions. "We have been clear from the beginning that collecting this many signatures would require hundreds of staff collecting on a daily basis," Kolenc said. "A large amount of our signatures are collected by our 28 regional volunteer teams, an infrastructure that will be around after signatures are submitted to Springfield. Trent Shepard of Urbana, who said he has collected at least 1,500 signatures on petitions, said he didn't resent that he did his work for free while others were paid. "From the beginning they were clear with us that this is what had to be done," Shepard said. "It's sad to me that this couldn't all be done with volunteers but I guess they knew what they were talking about. He noted that the campaign's coordinators reported recently that volunteers had gathered only about 75,000 of the reported 450,000 signatures expected to be collected. "So if that's all that volunteers alone would have gathered this would have been another failure," Shepard said. State Sen. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, said he felt the same as Shepard. "It's the reality of getting to that huge number," he said. "You're going to need both. You're going to need them to pull in those big numbers. A large majority of their numbers will be valid. But you're going to need the volunteer ones that are going to have a high degree of validity to get them over the top when it comes to the petition challenge. Yes for Independent Maps reported $1.87 million in campaign contributions during the three-month period ending March 30. Last week a rumor popped up — I got three calls about it within an hour — that retiring state Rep. Naomi Jakobsson, D-Urbana, was interested in becoming the Democratic candidate for Champaign County clerk to oppose the currently unopposed Gordy Hulten. Nope, said Jakobsson. "I hope they haven't started passing petitions," Jakobsson joked. "I have no plans to run for county clerk. I do not plan to run for clerk. Jakobsson, 72, who served 12 years as county recorder and is completing her 12th year in the Legislature, said she is looking forward to retirement. "I fully want to be able to spend time with my family and to do some volunteer work in the community," said Jakobsson. Incidentally, Jakobsson told me that her family has lived for about 40 years in the Urbana home once owned by O.L. Browder, the Urbana mayor who censored the showing of the 1913 film "Traffic in Souls," which was the topic of my column last Wednesday. Rose stayed out of the four-way Republican gubernatorial primary this year, but on Wednesday night he told the county GOP convention that he's on board the Rauner bandwagon. "I'm enormously excited after talking to him yesterday. We had a wonderful conversation about the University of Illinois and how Pat Quinn and Rod Blagojevich have destroyed the leadership of this institution that I have two degrees from," Rose said. "He's going to open tons of field offices in downstate Illinois and he's made a commitment to the citizens of Illinois and to rebuilding the Republican Party of Illinois. Intrigued about the remarks about the UI, I asked Rose what Rauner said about the university. "We talked about the board. We talked about how they ignore the alumni association," Rose said. "I'm not going to get into anything else now because I think he will do that. But I was just happy to hear someone talk about growing it and making sure that it is a premier institution in the world, that it was and that it can be again. The official said that the scale of the strikes against AQAP is "massive and unprecedented" and that at least 30 militants have been killed. The operation involved Yemeni commandos who are now "going after high-level AQAP targets," the official said. A day earlier, suspected drone strikes targeted al Qaeda fighters in Yemen for the second time in two days, killing "at least a dozen," the government official said. The predawn strikes targeted a mountain ridge in the southern province of Abyan, the official said. It's the same area where scores of followers of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula had gathered recently to hear from Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the head of the terrorist network's Yemeni branch and the global organization's "crown prince," the official said. Purported al Qaeda meeting on tape Ayman al-Zawahiri is the leader of al Qaeda. A reward up to $25 million has been offered by the U.S. government. Moktar Belmoktar was the leading figure of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. A reward up to $5 million has been offered by the U.S. government. Abu Muhammad al Julani is the leader of al-Nusra Front in Syria. Very little is known about Julani beyond his leadership status. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is the leader of Islamic State in Iraq. A reward up to $10 million has been offered by the U.S. government. Sirajudin Haqqani is the leader of the Haqqani Network in Afghanistan. A reward up to $5 million has been offered by the U.S. government. Photos: Most-wanted terrorists "It's too early to tell how many militants were killed, but the number is at least a dozen," the official said. The targets included "foreign nationals," the official said, but he provided no details of what their nationalities were. Nor was it clear whether any high-value targets were among the dead and wounded, he said. Yemen's state news agency SABA said three strikes targeted an al Qaeda training camp in the village of Wadi al Khila, about 450 kilometers (280 miles) south of the capital Sanaa. The fighters were "preparing to launch attacks against Yemeni and foreign interests in the area," according to a statement from the country's Supreme Security Committee. "These strikes destroyed the training facility completely and killed both Yemeni and foreign members," it said. The official said Sunday's raid was a joint U.S.-Yemeni operation. He would not confirm whether drones were used in the attack, but the United States is the only country known to have conducted drone strikes in Yemen -- and as a rule, U.S. officials don't comment on those strikes. But the official said the area is so rugged and mountainous that Yemeni troops would have faced heavy losses in any ground assault. Al Qaeda operatives had fled to the area after a 2012 push by government troops, backed by the United States, he said. The high-level official said it would take time to fully clarify the details of the weekend's strikes -- whether the raids targeted camps, vehicles on the move or both, the full death toll among the militants, and whether there were any civilian casualties. A Saturday drone strike in a neighboring province killed at least 10 suspected al Qaeda militants, but also killed three civilian day laborers. But other Yemeni officials, who asked to remain anonymous as they are not authorized to speak to the media, said there was growing frustration within the government about the lack of clarity and expressed concern that some of the information being reported by the military may be propaganda. "I'm worried this is an attempt to convince Yemenis that the U.S. and Yemen have turned a corner and are in the process of destroying AQAP," one of those other officials said. "At this hour, the numbers of militants being reported as being killed keeps changing, and we still aren't sure if any civilians have been killed or wounded in these strikes. "Yemenis are smart enough to doubt initial reports of this type," he added. "If this does turn out to be exaggeration, it will make the people here trust their government even less than they do and fuel growing anger over the drone program. The United States first used armed drones to pick off an al Qaeda operative in Yemen in 2002. Strikes on suspected al Qaeda figures resumed in 2009, with more than 100 reported since then, according to the New America Foundation, a U.S.-based think tank that tracks the raids. Those strikes have killed somewhere between 700 and 1,000 people, including at least 81 civilians, the foundation says. Journalist Hakim Almasmari contributed to this report. After more than three days of frustration and failure, divers on Sunday finally found a way into the submerged ferry off South Korea's southern shore, discovering more than a dozen bodies inside the ship and pushing the confirmed death toll to over four dozens, officials said. The confirmed death toll from South Korea's ferry disaster rose past 50 on Sunday as divers finally found a way inside the sunken vessel, quickly discovering more than a dozen bodies in what almost certainly is just the beginning of a massive and grim recovery effort. Two MH-60 helicopters operating off the USS Bonhomme Richard are searching an area about 6 to 17 miles from the disaster site at the request of the South Korean commander directing the search for survivors. The U.S. military continues to assist South Korea search for survivors of Wednesday’s ferry sinking in the Yellow Sea, even as the prospect of finding anyone still alive seems increasingly unlikely. A U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship headed to the site where a South Korean ferry sank Wednesday to help if needed, the U.S. Navy said. The captain of the ferry that sank off South Korea, leaving more than 300 missing or dead, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of negligence and abandoning people in need. Two crew members also were taken into custody, including a rookie third mate who a prosecutor said was steering in challenging waters unfamiliar to her when the accident occurred.JINDO, South Korea — The South Korean ferry that sank was crippled by confusion and indecision well after it began listing, a radio transcript released Sunday showed, suggesting the chaotic situation may have added to a death toll that could eventually exceed 300. About 30 minutes after the Sewol began tilting, a crew member asked a marine traffic controller whether passengers would be rescued if they abandoned ship off South Korea's southern coast. The crew member posed the question three times in succession. That followed several statements from the ship that people aboard could not move and another in which someone declared that it was "impossible to broadcast" instructions. Many people followed the captain's initial order to stay below deck, where it is feared they remain trapped. Sixty-one bodies have been recovered, and about 240 people are still missing. "Even if it's impossible to broadcast, please go out and let the passengers wear life jackets and put on more clothing," an unidentified official at Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center urged at 9:24 a.m. Wednesday, 29 minutes after the ferry first reported trouble, according to the transcript released by South Korea's coast guard. "If this ferry evacuates passengers, will you be able to rescue them?" the unidentified crew member asked. "At least make them wear life rings and make them escape!" the traffic-center official responded. "If this ferry evacuates passengers, will they be rescued right away?" the crew member asked again. "Don't let them go bare — at least make them wear life rings and make them escape!" the traffic official repeated. "The rescue of human lives from the Sewol ferry ... the captain should make his own decision and evacuate them. We don't know the situation very well. The captain should make the final decision and decide whether you're going to evacuate passengers or not. "I'm not talking about that," the crew member said. The traffic official then said patrol boats would arrive in 10 minutes, though another civilian ship was already nearby and had told controllers that it would rescue anyone who went overboard. The ferry sank with 476 people on board, many of them students from a single high school. The cause of the disaster is not yet known, but prosecutors have said the ship made a sharp turn before it began to list. Several crew members, including the captain, have been arrested on suspicion of negligence and abandoning passengers. More than 170 people survived the sinking of the Sewol, which had been on its way from the South Korean port city of Incheon to the southern island of Jeju. The captain took more than half an hour to issue an evacuation order, which several passengers have said they never heard. The confirmed death toll jumped over the weekend after divers finally found a way inside the sunken vessel and quickly discovered more than a dozen bodies. They had been hampered for days by strong currents, bad weather and low visibility. The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that another body was recovered early Monday near the sunken ship. Families of the missing are staying on Jindo Island, where information sheets taped to the walls of a gymnasium offered details to help identify any corpses, including gender, height, length of hair and clothing. It was too little for Lee Joung-hwa, a friend of a crew member who is among the missing. "If only they could have made some kind of image of the person's face. Who can tell who this person is just by height and weight?" Lee said. A woman with a blue baseball cap shouted at government officials who were seated nearby, working at their desks. "I can't live like this! I'm so anxious!" she yelled. Anguished families, fearful they might be left without even their loved ones' bodies, vented rage Sunday over the government's handling of the crisis. About 100 relatives attempted a long protest march to the presidential Blue House in Seoul, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) to the north, saying they wanted to voice their complaints to President Park Geun-hye. They walked for about six hours before police officers in neon jackets blocked a main road. "The government is the killer," they shouted as they pushed against a police barricade. "We want an answer from the person in charge about why orders are not going through and nothing is being done," said Lee Woon-geun, father of 17-year-old missing passenger Lee Jung-in. "They are clearly lying and kicking the responsibility to others. Earlier Sunday, relatives of the missing blocked the car of Prime Minister Chung Hong-won and demanded a meeting with Park as Chung made a visit to Jindo. Chung later returned to the gymnasium, but met only with a number of representatives of the family members in a side office. On Sunday evening, dozens of relatives who gathered at the port in Jindo surrounded the fisheries minister, Lee Ju-young. They shouted, swore, yelled threats and pushed him as he was on his way to a meeting with other officials. Relatives are desperate to retrieve bodies before they decompose beyond recognition, Lee Woon-geun said. "After four or five days, the body starts to decay. When it's decayed, if you try to hold a hand, it might fall off," he said. "I miss my son. I'm really afraid I might not get to find his body. The Sewol's captain, Lee Joon-seok, 68, was arrested Saturday, along with one of the ship's three helmsmen and the 25-year-old third mate. The third mate was steering at the time of the accident, in a challenging area where she had not steered before, and the captain said he was not on the bridge at the time. Senior prosecutor Yang Jung-jin said the third mate has refused to tell investigators why she made the sharp turn. Prosecutors have not named the third mate, but a fellow crew member identified her as Park Han-kyul. As he was taken from court in Mokpo on Saturday, the captain explained his decision to wait before ordering an evacuation. "At the time, the current was very strong, the temperature of the ocean water was cold," Lee told reporters, describing his fear that passengers, even if they were wearing life jackets, could drift away "and face many other difficulties. He said rescue boats had not yet arrived, and there were no civilian vessels nearby. Both West Dundee and Carpentersville were able to secure grants from the Kane/Kendall Council of Mayors to repair and widen their sections of the road. The extreme cold temperatures did more than just keep people indoors this winter. They also wreaked havoc on many of the area’s roadways. Since March, Carpentersville has been filling the numerous potholes that dot the village’s streets, a bumpy reminder of how harsh the season was. “We will continue to have crews filling in potholes on a daily basis,” said Village Engineer Kevin Gray. “Our operations will remain until all potholes have been filled. Residents can report any potholes they see through a new online form that can be found on the village’s homepage at http://vil.carpentersville.il.us/. “This will allow the village to fill in any potholes that may have been missed,” Gray said. West Dundee Public Works Director Richard Babica said crews have been filling potholes in the village at least once a week, if not twice, for the past several months. “Every roadway was pretty well beaten up,” he said. “It was a pretty brutal winter on the roadways. Those driving on Huntley Road between Route 31 and Randall Road know to take it slow due to the numerous and sometimes deep potholes. Portions of the road fall under several jurisdictions: Carpentersville, West Dundee and Kane County. The section of Huntley Road that’s west of Tartans Drive to Sleepy Hollow Road falls under West Dundee’s jurisdiction. “We’ve done patching out there consistently over the last five years,” Babica said. “That road has taken a pretty huge beating over the winter. He said the public works crew is limiting its efforts on Huntley Road to just patching because of a reconstruction project set to begin in 2016. Both West Dundee and Carpentersville were able to secure grants from the Kane/Kendall Council of Mayors to repair and widen their sections of the road. Babica said the two villages plan to work together on the project in order to limit the inconvenience to drivers and residents. “We thought between our agencies, if it’s going to inconvenience the public because of the major reconstruction than it’s better to do it all one summer, rather than one segment of the road one summer and one segment another summer,” he said. West Dundee residents can report potholes by going to the “Contact Us” tab on the village’s website at http://www.wdundee.org/. Babica said in the next few weeks, West Dundee will be launching a phone app called YourGov that will allow citizens to report non-emergency related issues to the the village. “It could be something as simple as taking a picture of an issue — a street light that’s out or a storm basin that’s full of debris — and that picture would generate a work request to the public works department,” he said. East Dundee Public Works Director Jim Kelly called the previous season “a tougher winter than normal. “We have quite a few more potholes, and a little deeper, too,” he said. “We used five tons of pothole patch in our small community. But we’ve kept up with them. (AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox held an emotional 20-minute pregame ceremony honoring victims of the Boston Marathon bombings along with law enforcement officials, medical personnel, runners and race volunteers before Sunday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. With canvasses of handwritten notes from each of the 50 states being held on the outfield warning track from the left field corner in front of the Green Monster around to the Pesky Pole, a number of victims came walking in from the left-field corner to a loud ovation. Just over a year ago, two bombs exploded near the finish line — less than a mile from Fenway Park, killing three and injuring over 260 others. It happened about an hour after Boston had defeated Tampa Bay. The family of Lu Lingzi, a Boston University graduate student from China that was killed in the bombings, made their first ever visit to Fenway Park and closed the ceremony with the traditional “Play Ball!” chant before the Red Sox took the field. Before the victims entered, police and medical personnel came from canvas alley along the right-field line before runners came in from center field and race volunteers also came straight in from the outfield. They all lined up in the outfield grass near the University of Massachusetts band that played the national anthem. Jim Gallagher, the president of the One Fund, a fund created to help victims and their families, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to David Ortiz. Former Boston Mayor Tom Menino, current Mayor Marty Walsh and Gov. Deval Patrick were behind the pitcher’s mound. There was a video tribute of the race and victims played with the backdrop music of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising. The ceremony was held exactly one year after the Red Sox played their first game in Fenway following the bombings. Before that game, Ortiz had a stirring moment when he spoke to the crowd and had a rousing speech that included an expletive. The 118th Boston Marathon is scheduled for Monday and the Red Sox play their annual 11 a.m. Patriots’ Day game, also against the Orioles. After Rico Noel stole second base in the first inning, Reymond Fuentes drove him home for the first run of the game. Later in the inning, El Paso added two runs on an error by Las Vegas second baseman Daniel Muno and another when Cameron Maybin scored on a wild pitch. Las Vegas got one run back in the bottom of the second, but Cody Decker gave El Paso its biggest lead of the night in the third inning when he hit a three-run home run over the left field wall to make the score 6-1. The 51s got close multiple times but never caught the Chihuahuas. Las Vegas loaded the bases in the eighth inning but El Paso closer Kevin Quackenbush got the final two outs of the eighth and pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season. Catcher Adam Moore went 3-for-3 with a walk in the win for El Paso. Blaine Boyer, Tony Sipp, Hector Ambriz and Quackenbush all had scoreless outings for the Chihuahuas. Great Dane: Eriksen has 12 goals this season As if Daniel Levy did not have enough on his plate, he now has to steel himself for yet another summer transfer battle. The Tottenham chairman is already trying to decide who is the man to get the club into the Champions League next season. Now he must batten down the hatches to fend off other clubs sniffing around Christian Eriksen. The free-kicks which brought goals for Paulinho and Younes Kaboul were the seventh and eighth assists of the season for the 22-year-old Dane. While Arsenal’s record signing, £42million Mesut Ozil, has nine goals and needed a couple of months to cope with the rigours of the Premier League, Eriksen has 12 goals in total. The for­mer law­yer has an easy man­ner, a fresh face, the abil­ity to talk with ease and pur­pose and a lit­tle good hu­mour. His Tampa Bay Light­ning are down 2-0 to the Mont­real Cana­diens in their first-round play­off ser­ies, with Game 3 Sun­day night in Mont­real. And the first-year NHL head coach is treat­ing it like a pleas­ant day in court, with a jury that can yet be swayed. “Every­one thinks we’re sup­pos­ed to lose,” said Coop­er after Tampa’s mor­ning skate. “Now I’m hear­ing done, be on the golf course by Wed­nes­day, I’ve heard it all. “But at some point they’re go­ing to have to do that in front of their fans, try and knock us out. I’m sure they’ve never had a 2-0 lead on the road and come back and blown it. Mont­real did just that in 2011 against Bos­ton, of course, and against Carolina in 2006. So it doesn’t mat­ter how well we play, we were still not picked to do any­thing. “I’m sure in­jur­ies prob­ably helped struc­ture why people chose us to not win the ser­ies. We get home ice and don’t de­liv­er the way clear­ly we want­ed to. Coop­er is a great ex­plain­er, and it’s one of his strengths as a coach. He got here by coach­ing kids while he was practicing law in Lan­sing, Mich. He even­tu­al­ly quit law to coach in Tex­ar­kana, Texas, and worked his way to the NHL. Tampa sur­vived Ste­ven Stamkos’s bro­ken leg and Martin St. Louis’s thun­der­ous mood to post a 101-point sea­son, and Coop­er has been their steady man at the helm, with rook­ies every­where and con­stant tur­bu­lence. When Mont­real counter­part Mi­chel Therrien speaks, you can al­most see him forming the sen­ten­ces in his head, and eras­ing any­thing that could be too in­ter­est­ing, in either lan­guage. He is under pres­sure be­cause he is Mont­real’s head coach. Some­times he lets some­thing slip — like Sun­day, when he told re­por­ters, “We know where Palat is hurt. We have to play phys­ic­al against him, and take away his time and space.” It wasn’t quite mena­cing, but Therrien’s been a bully for a long time. Coop­er, mean­while, is still at ease, and pretty hon­est for both a law­yer and a hock­ey coach. He was pressed, a lit­tle later, on wheth­er the pres­sure was real­ly on Mont­real. He smiled.“Well, there’s only pres­sure be­cause two games doesn’t win you a ser­ies,” Coop­er said. “But let’s be a real­ist here. They’re up two games to zero. I would like to be up two games to zero. I think in that situ­a­tion, they’re in a bet­ter spot than we are. I’d rath­er be up 2-0 than down 2-0.”He may be booed Sun­day night, but it’s not like Coop­er doesn’t like Mont­real, for the re­cord. It’s all an op­por­tun­ity.“I’ll tell you one thing about be­ing in Mont­real, and I think I said this in Tampa, as a fan and as a coach in the league, there’s some­thing about com­ing to Mont­real and be­ing in this arena — from the pres­en­ta­tion be­fore the game to when you’re on the ice to the atmos­phere, they hit a home run,” Coop­er said.“I’m sure it’s a treas­ure to play here be­cause the fans are ex­treme­ly pas­sion­ate: they cheer, they have chants, they under­stand the game, and as a vis­itor it’s real­ly cool to be a part of that.“I’ve real­ly enjoyed it. We played an Amer­ican League game here dur­ing the lock­out and there was 18,000 fans here and it was just a ton of fun. I’ve been for­tun­ate to play a few regu­lar-sea­son games here and we’ve just real­ly have enjoyed it. I per­son­al­ly have real­ly enjoyed the atmos­phere. You try to sit here and say, `Is this a hos­tile en­viron­ment?’ I’m sure it is, but I don’t like to look at it that way.“I like to look at it like it’s a great hock­ey en­viron­ment and em­brace this be­cause there’s a lot of sto­ried hist­ory that’s been in this build­ing and we can ac­tual­ly be a part of this hist­ory. We are a part of this hist­ory. Now we can be a part of hist­ory that’s real­ly not talked about so much, or we can be a part of hist­ory that’s real­ly talked about. Following Toronto GM Masai Ujiri's 'F--- Brooklyn' remark, Pierce and Williams were dismissive of the Raptors' trash-talking. Paul Pierce plays the ‘Who is this guy?’ card in responding to Raptors GM Masai Ujiri’s ‘F--- Brooklyn’ remark at a pep rally before Toronto’s first-round series against the Nets. If Raptors GM Masai Ujiri tried to stir the pot and ignite a war of words, he instead elicited a different type of insult from the Nets: indifference and rejection. After Sunday's film session, Paul Pierce said the Nets were further encouraged because they could've played better and still came up with a road victory in Game 1 against Toronto. And on the subject of Toronto's GM hollering "F--- Brooklyn" at a fan pep rally prior to tipoff, Pierce went with the "Who is this guy?" response. "I'm shocked Bryan Colangelo would make such a comment," Pierce said in a sarcastic tone. Ouch. As Pierce was then told, Colangelo is the former Raptors GM. He stepped down over the summer after 12 seasons. Ujiri then took over. "I don't know who you're talking about," Pierce responded, echoing the sentiment of his coach. This has become the go-to move from the Nets, a reaction that either they're above the trash talk, or, more likely and insultingly, the Raptors are beneath them. On the drama that tells the story of five Latina housekeepers of Beverly Hills' most wealthy and powerful, Deklin plays Nicholas Deering: a mysterious and charming millionaire with a closet full of secrets from his past. A past he tries to keep locked away from his romantic partner Marisol, played by Ana Ortiz. Can Nicholas keep the sins from his past away from his present? That battle is what Deklin says makes his role on this Marc Cherry/Eva Longoria executive produced series so fun for him. Mark- Thank you. I am very excited. It's a treat to go to work everyday. Most of my stuff is with Ana Ortiz and Joanna Adler and I'm very, very lucky to be working with them. Great cast all around! We've formed a little social circle. We like to drink and eat good food and go out together. So it's been a great experience. If I have to work away from home, Atlanta is a great place to be. Really great restaurant scene there. Fantastic. Tell me about your character. I know you play Nicholas Deering, a millionaire, whose his wife suffered a mysterious death. Mark- I have a two-fold answer. What I enjoyed about the idea of the character before I started working on it was just the idea that this was somebody who had a lot of secrets and layers. You'll see in the first episode, without giving anything away, the first episode for me is all set up. Not a lot happens; it's a lot of flashback and setting up of what happened in the past. It doesn't reveal the whole story of what happened in the past, but it sort of sets up the circumstances. So obviously this is a guy who is hiding a lot and the sins of his past may come back to bite him in the ass. The second part of my answer is, what I have enjoyed the most is working with Ana Ortiz and sort of finding the relationship that Nicholas and Marisol have because even though he's a guy who has done some bad things, the one truth that we have come to - and I spoke to Marc Cherry and the producers about this very early on - I said is Nick really in love with Marisol or is this some sort of long con? And they said, “No that's the one thing; in the middle of all these lies and secrets, the one thing that is absolutely true is he is madly in love with Marisol. And she is also madly in love with him.” So that's the thing that she and I have really clung to and built everything around. And really all the secrets and lies that he is keeping are in the service of that. He feels like if she ever finds out what I did, she might not love me anymore. So it's a really love story there between them. Mark- It really is a love story. But it's juicy because like I said ultimately a relationship can't survive if it's filled with lies. So at some point he's going to have to pay the piper in some form or another. We just don't know what's that going to be. Obviously he doesn't know that either, and the audience doesn't know. They are sort of writing it as we go so I don't even know what Nicholas's penise is going to ultimately be. At some point the truth will out. It definitely seems like he's a very mysterious character. Mark- That's what's appealing about it as an actor. To me that's the fun of it. There was some back story that I sort of had to know- and I can't tell you what that is (Laughs). There are a few things that were hinted on early on and I went to the producers and said look guys you have to tell me at least what this is so I know what it is that I am covering up. There are some things that he has done. And I like the way like you said the onion skin is peeled back layer by layer. It's really fun. Every episode that I'm in you'll see a different side of Nicholas, and a different layer, and a different back story, and a different present story and a different emotional palette. As an actor, that's obviously really appealing; that you're not just playing the same person over and over again. Mark- Yes, from what I understand my first wife and Evelyn (Rebecca Wisocky) were very dear friends. And Adrian (Tom Irwin) and I were also very friendly. But I think after my wife died, I went into a sort of seclusion, and I think the idea is my character has been living in this sort of time capsule emotionally for almost 15 years. And then he meets Marisol, just by chance at a book store and they start talking and they hit it off. Then they start dating and his whole life just reopens. He was sort of shut down emotionally and she gives him a new lease on life. And so he's got to negotiate a lot of dark stuff from the past. So that's what we are going to be watching unfold. I know I can tell you that it kicks off with a flashback to 1999. And we're going to revisit 1999 more than once during the season. We've shot a number of flashbacks. In terms of what we've shot so far, we haven't addressed why exactly he is in Beverly Hills. The assumption is that he has been there for some time. He is an established business man there and a philanthropist. And there was some talk at one point that Nicholas might run for office. I don't know if that's going to happen or not. Obviously all these things will be revealed over time, to the cast as well as to the audience. Mark- Yes, and I'll give you a threefold answer this time! There was one scene in particular that for me was definitely as an actor the most satisfying. But sadly, I literally can't tell you anything about the scene because it was so pivotal and it would be a spoiler! But there were also other moments that were fun just in different ways. My first scene as the actor hired to play this role as well as Joanna Adler who plays Opal; it was our first day on the job and we were just thrown into the fire. And Eva Longoria was directing- and I've known Eva from before- we just dove right in and it was sort of an intense flashback scene and it was all-nighter, and it was outside and freezing in the middle of winter. It was just sort of intense and kind of wonderful. Because it was an immediate trial by fire, there was no dipping your toes in the shallow end of the pool, which was exciting. And then my third part of the answer, we had shot the first episode which is a lot set up for my character and a lot of exposition of his background, and when Marc Cherry and the producers gave me the answer about the fact that Nicholas and Marisol are really in love with each other, that gave me permission to really play that and really find that connection with Marisol. And so in the second episode not much happens for Nicholas, it's not his most exciting episode, but it was fun for me because it was one of the first episode's where you just see Nick and Marisol being a couple. Not a couple that are sort of troubled, or fraught, or trying to figure something out or hiding something; but literally just two people who are functioning under the same roof lovingly with this great sort of chemistry and that felt really good I think for both of us. It was just a moment where it was just a click. And Ana sort of went, “Oh, there it is! There's the relationship!” So that's satisfying too as an actor. One of the things that was a concern of mine was I didn't want the sins of Nicholas's past to overshadow him so much that he just becomes a bad guy. And I'm not at all opposed to playing a bad guy, but the idea is if Marisol is in love with this guy, we've got to see why. If he's just this mustache-twirling villain, then why would she be in love with him? So it was fun to discover the other side of him: the part of him that really is a good guy and wants to be a good guy. So we're going to see the good qualities in him, not just the bad. Mark- I think we're going to see both. He's not a clean-cut good guy or bad guy. He's just a complicated guy. I think his intentions are generally good. He's not a guy who is saying I am going to do evil in the world. But that said, he's got some stuff in his past that he is going to have to deal with. It's a very layered role and sounds very interesting. Mark- Very layered, which is what turned me on to the role in the first place. I like finding either very good guys or well-intentioned bad guys. I like finding the gray areas. That's always interesting. More then black and white. Mark- I'm in the series finale of “Warehouse 13” and I think that's coming on next week. I shot that last year. They're wrapping up their whole storyline and I was brought in as a sort of old Frat brother to Eddie Mclintock. Season two of "Devious Maids" premieres Sunday, April 20 at 10pm est on Lifetime. CommentsIf there is a common phrase that all 32 teams use in the NFL draft, it is value. The goal of adding talent to a roster is to get the most bang for your buck, whether it's drafting a promising player or signing an undrafted free agent. This year's draft is loaded with potential value picks because it's so deep at virtually every position. There's a perfect blend of star power at the top and quality depth in the later rounds. In this latest mock draft, here are the best value picks for all 32 first-round selections. 1. No one can deny that Jadeveon Clowney believes in himself, to the point where some label him cocky or arrogant. After his pro day, Jadeveon Clowney is confident he should be the No. 1 pick in NFL Draft. http://t.co/AhAiwHHHLM pic.twitter. Whatever your personal opinion of him is, there's no refuting his amazing talent and upside. The Texans are in a strange position where they need a quarterback, but this freakish athlete who can get after the passer is sitting in their lap. 2. St. If Sam Bradford is going to take the next step or stay upright long enough to prove he can, someone has to protect his blind side. Greg Robinson is a worthy No. 2 pick and can step in right away for an improving Rams team. 3. In a class without an elite quarterback prospect, the Jaguars have their pick of a solid bunch. Blake Bortles doesn't have top-flight arm strength, but the accuracy and touch on his passes, as well as prototypical height at 6'5", make him an excellent fit for a team that has to develop a quarterback. 4. The media made a lot out of Teddy Bridgewater's poor pro day, but Bill Barnwell of Grantland. The entire pre-draft process — but most notably the pro day quarterback workout — is designed to make guys like Bortles look good while hiding the strengths of a player like Bridgewater... And Bortles might very well be a better quarterback than Bridgewater when all is said and done, but I strongly doubt what happened last week gives us any reliable data on whether that’s the case. Having a poor workout in shorts isn't ideal for a job interview in the NFL, but it doesn't erase the evidence that Bridgewater is more than capable of handling himself when the pads are on. 5. Michael Conroy The Raiders have actually done a good job of supplementing their roster in free agency, even with the Rodger Saffold fiasco. They've added quality veterans to cheap one- and two-year deals that don't tie up their salary cap long term. Even though quarterback is still a massive problem, there isn't one worth taking at this spot. Sorry, Johnny Manziel fans, but he's not a top-five pick, especially in a draft this deep. Therefore, the best thing Oakland can do with its first-round pick is find a player who will protect the future quarterback, whoever that may be, for the next decade. Jake Matthews is perfect for what this team needs right now because he has such a high floor and is ready to start from Day 1. 6. The Falcons would love to see Jadeveon Clowney or one of the two tackles get to this spot, but Khalil Mack is a fantastic consolation prize. It's unclear whether the Falcons are switching to a 3-4 defense, although the signing of a player like Tyson Jackson suggests that. Mack is a perfect 3-4 outside linebacker with the ability to drop back in coverage or rush the passer. Either way, he has the kind of talent that a team must find a way to use by any means necessary. 7. Despite their record last year, the Buccaneers aren't far away from being competitive in the NFC South. Josh McCown may not be the long-term solution at quarterback, but having multiple options to choose from is never a bad thing. Something else that isn't bad is having dynamic playmakers on the outside for those quarterbacks to target. Vincent Jackson is a home run threat, so pairing him with do-it-all stud Sammy Watkins would give the Buccaneers a dynamic that no team in the division could stop. 8. Based on the hype that quarterbacks get, Manziel at No. 8 would appear to be a good value for the Vikings. He still has a lot to prove, though people who went nuts after his pro day assume that an MVP award is coming soon. Bottom line: The Vikings need a quarterback, and Manziel will also help sell tickets. He's not without talent, but a player of his size (6'0") who can get reckless on the field has to prove that staying healthy won't be a problem. 9. The Bills went all-in on EJ Manuel last year and got some positive results, but 28 sacks on 306 pass attempts suggest more help is needed up front. Taylor Lewan is a big (6'7", 309 lbs), physical specimen who brings an attitude with him that can have a positive impact on everyone else. Mike Evans is also an option here, but solidifying the right tackle position is equally as important for Buffalo. 10. After addressing wide receiver in free agency, not to mention having plenty of options later in the draft, Lions have to work on a secondary that ranked 20th in yards per attempt and 23rd in pass defense. Justin Gilbert is big (6'0", 202 lbs) and fast (4.37 40-yard dash) and has the ability to get after the ball after it's been thrown. Seattle has proved the value of having a big secondary that can play the ball, so look for a lot of teams to try emulating that style. 11. If you like raw upside, Anthony Barr is the player for you. He's not a refined edge-rusher, to say the least, but he has done nothing but produce since moving to the defensive side of the ball at UCLA two years ago. The Titans need to find players up front who can create pressure, especially since they have to play Andrew Luck twice a year. Barr's ceiling is as high as anyone's in this class, but it will take time to develop. 12. In 3yrs when he can renegotiate his rookie contract, UNC TE Eric Ebron will want to be paid like a WR too. Count on it. Of course, that's a reference to New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham. While Ebron isn't as athletic as the All-Pro, he does have a knack for making big plays thanks to excellent speed and added bulk. The Giants have been looking for a tight end since Eli Manning was in diapers, so having Ebron land in their lap with the No. 12 pick is too good to be true. 13. St. Last year, the Rams added their slot wide receiver in Tavon Austin. This year they can get a true outside threat in the form of Texas A&M's Mike Evans. He's not a burner like Austin, but he has tremendous hands and leaping ability to create big plays. 14. The Bears took care of their need for outside pass-rushers by signing Lamarr Houston and Jared Allen. Now it's time to solidify what was by far the worst run defense in football last year. Chicago allowed 161.4 yards per game on the ground in 2013, 25 more than the next-closest team. Aaron Donald doesn't fit the typical definition of a defensive tackle at 285 pounds, yet he constantly overpowered anyone in his way at college and dazzled with a 4.68 40 time at the combine. 15. The Steelers are in need of a youth injection on the defensive side of the ball. Darqueze Dennard will fit right in with Dick LeBeau's defensive style, bringing an aggressive, physical mentality to a unit that looked slow and old at times last season. 16. It's no secret that the Cowboys have to address their defensive line. They cut DeMarcus Ware and had just 34 sacks last season, 25th in the NFL. They could go for an edge-rusher like Auburn's Dee Ford, but this is a little too high for him. Timmy Jernigan isn't a sure thing by any stretch. He's been inconsistent throughout his career and doesn't have elite strength for the position. But the Florida State product is sneaky quick and has good footwork to move around slower offensive linemen. Eventually Jerry Jones has to make the right pick for the team instead of trying to grab all the headlines with a splashy move. 17. The Ravens invested in a safety last year, drafting Matt Elam in the first round, but they still need to find another player who can drop back in coverage to avoid giving up big plays over the top. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix gives John Harbaugh a lot of versatility, who can rotate him in and out with Elam. The Alabama safety is a dynamic ball hawk who can be an Ed Reed-lite type of player. Which team will get the most bang for its buck in this mock draft? Normally a guard isn't going to go this high, but Rex Ryan has never played by the rules. He's going to do what's in the best interest of his team, which usually involves taking a defensive player. Geno Smith needs help up front to make use of weapons like Eric Decker on the outside. The Jets also need to get back to being more physical up front so they can run the ball effectively and take pressure off Smith's right arm, which was exposed down the stretch last year. After New York signed Chris Johnson to pair with Chris Ivory, Jackson is a logical choice in Round 1. 19. The Dolphins have helped their offensive line already with the addition of Branden Albert, but that's not enough to offset the losses of Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito. Zack Martin doesn't have an elite-level ceiling, but he's polished and will play right away. He's also versatile, which would give the Dolphins options. Miami needs bodies who can keep Ryan Tannehill upright, so someone like Martin should be high on the priority list. 20. We get so caught up in measurables with the NFL draft that it's hard to forget what players do on the field. Jason Verrett doesn't look the part of a first-round cornerback at 5'9", 189 pounds, but put him in pads and he looks like a star who can read the quarterback and play the ball as well as any defensive back in this class. 21. Michael Conroy One reason the Packers have plateaued in recent years is an inability to create pressure up front. B.J. Raji is getting older and less effective. Clay Matthews is the only viable edge-rusher on the team, though he missed the end of last season with a thumb injury. Louis Nix III has been all over the map during the season and throughout the draft process, but he drew rave reviews from Russ Lande of SportsOnEarth. Consistently the first defensive linemen moving at the snap, Nix displays rare foot quickness for a 350-plus pounder. He is able to consistently get backfield penetration to disrupt run plays behind the line. Despite his initial quickness, agility and good hands, he does not rush the quarterback aggressively every snap and gets stuck on the line too often. The Packers need an intimidator up front if they want opponents to respect what they do. Nix is also an excellent fit as a 3-4 defensive tackle and perfect for Dom Capers' scheme. 22. Chip Kelly can add all the speed he wants on offense, but until that secondary can get stops, the Eagles aren't going to be anything more than a team that flirts with the postseason and occasionally sneaks in (see: 2013). Calvin Pryor is the enforcer that Kelly can plug in behind the defense to go after the ball. He also has the speed and strength to play the line and defend the run. 23. Alex Smith will never be a great quarterback, but he can be very good with the right weapons and/or system. Jim Harbaugh and Andy Reid have figured that out the last few years, but the latter needs to bring in another outside weapon to take advantage of his quarterback's strengths. Brandin Cooks is small for an NFL wide receiver (5'9", 189 lbs), but makes up for it with excellent first-step quickness and the best route running of any player at the position in this draft. 24. With the value of outside linebackers soaring in recent years, Ryan Shazier is one of the most underrated players in this class. He's not a workout warrior with great measurables, but he has a great feel for the field and a knack for finding the ball. 25. Hey, an Alabama offensive lineman going in the first round! Cyrus Kouandjio is more power and intensity than polish at this point, but he's so young (20) and has such a high ceiling that getting him at this spot is a steal. The Chargers hit on something special last season under head coach Mike McCoy, who was able to bring out the best Philip Rivers we've ever seen. Now the team needs to keep upgrading its offensive line to make the star quarterback even better and get past Denver in the AFC West. 26. Don't be shocked if the Browns have one of the best offenses in the NFL next year. They may be relying on a rookie quarterback, but with Josh Gordon on one side of the field and Marqise Lee on the other, whoever takes snaps knows he will have open receivers to throw to. Lee is not a burner in the traditional sense, but he has such good footwork and route-running ability that defensive backs can't keep up with him. 27. Hal Yeager Some players have a limited ceiling, but their specialty fits in perfectly with what a team needs. Dee Ford lacks the ability to be a force against the run, so his ability to speed-rush quarterbacks has to carry him in the NFL. Fortunately, this is a pass-happy league that covets edge-rushers. The Saints need to get more speed on the defensive line to keep up in an improving NFC South. 28. After letting all of Cam Newton's weapons from last year walk, the Panthers have to add impact receivers on the outside to avoid falling off a cliff. Kelvin Benjamin isn't a No. 1 receiver in the NFL because of limited speed, but you can't teach height. He is a nightmare for cornerbacks at 6'5", 240 pounds and built like a tight end with the hands and separating skills of a wide receiver. He will be a red-zone threat as soon as he walks in the door. 29. The Patriots dodged a bullet when Vince Wilfork restructured his contract, but it was also a reminder that the 32-year-old is long in the tooth and left the team in a lurch after going down with a season-ending injury after four games last year. Ra'Shede Hageman gives New England flexibility to rotate Wilfork out and keep the big man fresh later in the year. The Minnesota defensive tackle will be the heir apparent when the All-Pro retires or gets released. 30. San Francisco 49ers (12-4): Odell Beckham Jr. There doesn't seem to be a lot of urgency for the 49ers to fix their secondary, so adding a dynamic playmaker on the outside to help Colin Kaepernick's development seems like the best first-round play. Jim Harbaugh's offense already has Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree on the outside. Finding a quality slot receiver will really open things up for this team. Bill Williamson of ESPN. The NFL is a league of three-receiver sets, although the 49ers did not subscribe to that theory. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the 49ers were last in the NFL using three-receiver sets in 2013. They ran three-receiver sets on just 205 snaps. Green Bay ran the most in the NFL with 817 three-receiver sets. Quinton Patton is another receiver that the 49ers like, but he's also had limited exposure and may not be ready to carry the torch of a No. 3 receiver full time in 2014. It also doesn't hurt to have an insurance policy if/when Boldin retires and Crabtree gets hurt again. 31. It's obvious the Broncos are all-in to win this year. They've spent more money than it seems like they had to bring in Aqib Talib, Ware, T.J. Ward and Emmanuel Sanders, just hoping it will be enough to get Peyton Manning a second championship. Any rookies they draft this year aren't likely to see much playing time, so Bradley Roby will be a wise pick for John Elway. The Ohio State product needs time to adjust to the speed of the NFL since he's used to attacking the ball instead of reading quarterbacks. 32. It appeared Davante Adams' stock was going to drop following a 4.57 40-yard dash at the combine, but the Fresno State receiver rebounded nicely with a 4.47 time at the school's pro day in March. The Seahawks don't have many holes to worry about, so they can play with this pick. The loss of Golden Tate does make it easier for Pete Carroll to add another playmaker on the outside with the final pick of the first round. Note: All free-agent signing info according to NFL.com.
