Maybe he did. The former lawyer has an easy manner, a fresh face, the ability to talk with ease and purpose and a little good humour. His Tampa Bay Lightning are down 2-0 to the Montreal Canadiens in their first-round playoff series, with Game 3 Sunday night in Montreal. And the first-year NHL head coach is treating it like a pleasant day in court, with a jury that can yet be swayed. “Everyone thinks we’re supposed to lose,” said Cooper after Tampa’s morning skate. “Now I’m hearing done, be on the golf course by Wednesday, I’ve heard it all. “But at some point they’re going to have to do that in front of their fans, try and knock us out. I’m sure they’ve never had a 2-0 lead on the road and come back and blown it. Montreal did just that in 2011 against Boston, of course, and against Carolina in 2006. It was a lovely dig, breezily delivered, with a bit of a wink. This wasn’t Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri telling an adoring crowd in Toronto, “F--- Brooklyn,” before Game 1 of their playoff series. But it was a coach who wasn’t afraid to be a little playful, which hockey could use more of. “If you really look at the whole season of what’s gone on here, I don’t think there’s one person in this room if they were picking who would make the playoffs this year in our division was picking the Tampa Bay Lightning to go anywhere,” said Cooper, a 46-year-old, who was born in Prince George, B.C., and played some high school hockey in Saskatchewan. “We were like a hot pick for number six, maybe a little bit number seven in our division. Those guys in there ended up coming second. Then we get to the playoffs and everybody picked — I think we had 40 pollsters we went through, and I think 35 of the 40 picked the Montreal Canadiens to beat us. So it doesn’t matter how well we play, we were still not picked to do anything. “I’m sure injuries probably helped structure why people chose us to not win the series. We get home ice and don’t deliver the way clearly we wanted to. Cooper is a great explainer, and it’s one of his strengths as a coach. He got here by coaching kids while he was practicing law in Lansing, Mich. He eventually quit law to coach in Texarkana, Texas, and worked his way to the NHL. Tampa survived Steven Stamkos’s broken leg and Martin St. Louis’s thunderous mood to post a 101-point season, and Cooper has been their steady man at the helm, with rookies everywhere and constant turbulence. The injuries have continued, with starting goaltender Ben Bishop and super-rookie Ondrej Palat hurt. Palat, injured in Game 1, was a game-time decision for Game 3. When Montreal counterpart Michel Therrien speaks, you can almost see him forming the sentences in his head, and erasing anything that could be too interesting, in either language. He is under pressure because he is Montreal’s head coach. Sometimes he lets something slip — like Sunday, when he told reporters, “We know where Palat is hurt. We have to play physical against him, and take away his time and space.” It wasn’t quite menacing, but Therrien’s been a bully for a long time. Cooper, meanwhile, is still at ease, and pretty honest for both a lawyer and a hockey coach. He was pressed, a little later, on whether the pressure was really on Montreal. He smiled.“Well, there’s only pressure because two games doesn’t win you a series,” Cooper said. “But let’s be a realist here. They’re up two games to zero. I would like to be up two games to zero. I think in that situation, they’re in a better spot than we are. I’d rather be up 2-0 than down 2-0.”He may be booed Sunday night, but it’s not like Cooper doesn’t like Montreal, for the record. It’s all an opportunity.“I’ll tell you one thing about being in Montreal, and I think I said this in Tampa, as a fan and as a coach in the league, there’s something about coming to Montreal and being in this arena — from the presentation before the game to when you’re on the ice to the atmosphere, they hit a home run,” Cooper said.“I’m sure it’s a treasure to play here because the fans are extremely passionate: they cheer, they have chants, they understand the game, and as a visitor it’s really cool to be a part of that.“I’ve really enjoyed it. We played an American League game here during the lockout and there was 18,000 fans here and it was just a ton of fun. I’ve been fortunate to play a few regular-season games here and we’ve just really have enjoyed it. I personally have really enjoyed the atmosphere. You try to sit here and say, `Is this a hostile environment?’ I’m sure it is, but I don’t like to look at it that way.“I like to look at it like it’s a great hockey environment and embrace this because there’s a lot of storied history that’s been in this building and we can actually be a part of this history. We are a part of this history. Now we can be a part of history that’s really not talked about so much, or we can be a part of history that’s really talked about. Paul Pierce, Deron Williams and Nets brimming with confidence following Game 1 win over Raptors
Following Toronto GM Masai Ujiri's 'F--- Brooklyn' remark, Pierce and Williams were dismissive of the Raptors' trash-talking. Paul Pierce plays the ‘Who is this guy?’ card in responding to Raptors GM Masai Ujiri’s ‘F--- Brooklyn’ remark at a pep rally before Toronto’s first-round series against the Nets. If Raptors GM Masai Ujiri tried to stir the pot and ignite a war of words, he instead elicited a different type of insult from the Nets: indifference and rejection. After Sunday's film session, Paul Pierce said the Nets were further encouraged because they could've played better and still came up with a road victory in Game 1 against Toronto. And on the subject of Toronto's GM hollering "F--- Brooklyn" at a fan pep rally prior to tipoff, Pierce went with the "Who is this guy?" response. "I'm shocked Bryan Colangelo would make such a comment," Pierce said in a sarcastic tone. Ouch. As Pierce was then told, Colangelo is the former Raptors GM. He stepped down over the summer after 12 seasons. Ujiri then took over. "I don't know who you're talking about," Pierce responded, echoing the sentiment of his coach. This has become the go-to move from the Nets, a reaction that either they're above the trash talk, or, more likely and insultingly, the Raptors are beneath them. Deron Williams, who was aggressive offensively Saturday while scoring 24 points, cut off a reporter Sunday who was leading to the inevitable question. "Is there a Nets-Raptors rivalry? No. The Raptors, who are pushing a new edgy marketing campaign entitled "We the North," certainly weren't running away from their GM's profanity — even it might cost him some fine money from the NBA — posting the video on the team's Instagram account. Ujiri was also backed by players and Raptors coach Dwane Casey. Deron Williams gets aggressive on offense Saturday night, scoring 24 points. The only thing missing is a blessing from Toronto mayor Rob Ford, who was issued an insulting wager with Brooklyn borough president Rod Adams. "I can't say I'm surprised (at Ujiri's comment). But the backcourt of Williams and Johnson carried the Nets for most of three quarters, until Pierce took over down the stretch. "We know we can play a lot better than we did," said Pierce, who scored nine of his 15 points in the final three minutes. "We feel like we didn't play our best basketball. Coming out with a win and knowing we didn't play our best, we'll take some positives from that. The playoffs are sort of like a boxing match, man. You come out and you swing a punch, get some punches through, and then the next round it changes. You gotta expect them to make adjustments, but you also gotta expect us to make adjustments. Like I said, we didn't feel like we played our best basketball. There's some things we can do better defensively, we thought we gave up far too many threes in transition. So we have to take away some of their strengths that they were getting opportunities and knowing that we can play better. So it's all a chess match, a boxing match, a basketball game, and you gotta make adjustments, and that comes game in and game out. Pierce might be dismissing the Raptors GM, whoever it might be, but he's very aware of the moment. "Not a lot of guys really thrive in playoff pressure situations," he said Sunday. On the drama that tells the story of five Latina housekeepers of Beverly Hills' most wealthy and powerful, Deklin plays Nicholas Deering: a mysterious and charming millionaire with a closet full of secrets from his past. A past he tries to keep locked away from his romantic partner Marisol, played by Ana Ortiz. Can Nicholas keep the sins from his past away from his present? That battle is what Deklin says makes his role on this Marc Cherry/Eva Longoria executive produced series so fun for him. Mark- Thank you. I am very excited. It's a treat to go to work everyday. Most of my stuff is with Ana Ortiz and Joanna Adler and I'm very, very lucky to be working with them. Great cast all around! We've formed a little social circle. We like to drink and eat good food and go out together. So it's been a great experience. If I have to work away from home, Atlanta is a great place to be. Really great restaurant scene there. Fantastic. Tell me about your character. I know you play Nicholas Deering, a millionaire, whose his wife suffered a mysterious death. Mark- I have a two-fold answer. What I enjoyed about the idea of the character before I started working on it was just the idea that this was somebody who had a lot of secrets and layers. You'll see in the first episode, without giving anything away, the first episode for me is all set up. Not a lot happens; it's a lot of flashback and setting up of what happened in the past. It doesn't reveal the whole story of what happened in the past, but it sort of sets up the circumstances. So obviously this is a guy who is hiding a lot and the sins of his past may come back to bite him in the ass. The second part of my answer is, what I have enjoyed the most is working with Ana Ortiz and sort of finding the relationship that Nicholas and Marisol have because even though he's a guy who has done some bad things, the one truth that we have come to - and I spoke to Marc Cherry and the producers about this very early on - I said is Nick really in love with Marisol or is this some sort of long con? And they said, “No that's the one thing; in the middle of all these lies and secrets, the one thing that is absolutely true is he is madly in love with Marisol. And she is also madly in love with him.” So that's the thing that she and I have really clung to and built everything around. And really all the secrets and lies that he is keeping are in the service of that. He feels like if she ever finds out what I did, she might not love me anymore. So it's a really love story there between them. Mark- It really is a love story. But it's juicy because like I said ultimately a relationship can't survive if it's filled with lies. So at some point he's going to have to pay the piper in some form or another. We just don't know what's that going to be. Obviously he doesn't know that either, and the audience doesn't know. They are sort of writing it as we go so I don't even know what Nicholas's penise is going to ultimately be. At some point the truth will out. It definitely seems like he's a very mysterious character. Mark- That's what's appealing about it as an actor. To me that's the fun of it. There was some back story that I sort of had to know- and I can't tell you what that is (Laughs). There are a few things that were hinted on early on and I went to the producers and said look guys you have to tell me at least what this is so I know what it is that I am covering up. There are some things that he has done. And I like the way like you said the onion skin is peeled back layer by layer. It's really fun. Every episode that I'm in you'll see a different side of Nicholas, and a different layer, and a different back story, and a different present story and a different emotional palette. As an actor, that's obviously really appealing; that you're not just playing the same person over and over again. Mark- Yes, from what I understand my first wife and Evelyn (Rebecca Wisocky) were very dear friends. And Adrian (Tom Irwin) and I were also very friendly. But I think after my wife died, I went into a sort of seclusion, and I think the idea is my character has been living in this sort of time capsule emotionally for almost 15 years. And then he meets Marisol, just by chance at a book store and they start talking and they hit it off. Then they start dating and his whole life just reopens. He was sort of shut down emotionally and she gives him a new lease on life. And so he's got to negotiate a lot of dark stuff from the past. So that's what we are going to be watching unfold. I know I can tell you that it kicks off with a flashback to 1999. And we're going to revisit 1999 more than once during the season. We've shot a number of flashbacks. In terms of what we've shot so far, we haven't addressed why exactly he is in Beverly Hills. The assumption is that he has been there for some time. He is an established business man there and a philanthropist. And there was some talk at one point that Nicholas might run for office. I don't know if that's going to happen or not. Obviously all these things will be revealed over time, to the cast as well as to the audience. Mark- Yes, and I'll give you a threefold answer this time! There was one scene in particular that for me was definitely as an actor the most satisfying. But sadly, I literally can't tell you anything about the scene because it was so pivotal and it would be a spoiler! But there were also other moments that were fun just in different ways. My first scene as the actor hired to play this role as well as Joanna Adler who plays Opal; it was our first day on the job and we were just thrown into the fire. And Eva Longoria was directing- and I've known Eva from before- we just dove right in and it was sort of an intense flashback scene and it was all-nighter, and it was outside and freezing in the middle of winter. It was just sort of intense and kind of wonderful. Because it was an immediate trial by fire, there was no dipping your toes in the shallow end of the pool, which was exciting. And then my third part of the answer, we had shot the first episode which is a lot set up for my character and a lot of exposition of his background, and when Marc Cherry and the producers gave me the answer about the fact that Nicholas and Marisol are really in love with each other, that gave me permission to really play that and really find that connection with Marisol. And so in the second episode not much happens for Nicholas, it's not his most exciting episode, but it was fun for me because it was one of the first episode's where you just see Nick and Marisol being a couple. Not a couple that are sort of troubled, or fraught, or trying to figure something out or hiding something; but literally just two people who are functioning under the same roof lovingly with this great sort of chemistry and that felt really good I think for both of us. It was just a moment where it was just a click. And Ana sort of went, “Oh, there it is! There's the relationship!” So that's satisfying too as an actor. One of the things that was a concern of mine was I didn't want the sins of Nicholas's past to overshadow him so much that he just becomes a bad guy. And I'm not at all opposed to playing a bad guy, but the idea is if Marisol is in love with this guy, we've got to see why. If he's just this mustache-twirling villain, then why would she be in love with him? So it was fun to discover the other side of him: the part of him that really is a good guy and wants to be a good guy. So we're going to see the good qualities in him, not just the bad. Mark- I think we're going to see both. He's not a clean-cut good guy or bad guy. He's just a complicated guy. I think his intentions are generally good. He's not a guy who is saying I am going to do evil in the world. But that said, he's got some stuff in his past that he is going to have to deal with. It's a very layered role and sounds very interesting. Mark- Very layered, which is what turned me on to the role in the first place. I like finding either very good guys or well-intentioned bad guys. I like finding the gray areas. That's always interesting. More then black and white. Mark- I'm in the series finale of “Warehouse 13” and I think that's coming on next week. I shot that last year. They're wrapping up their whole storyline and I was brought in as a sort of old Frat brother to Eddie Mclintock. Season two of "Devious Maids" premieres Sunday, April 20 at 10pm est on Lifetime. A study found ring-necked parakeets, known for their acid green colour, large size and loud squawking, are frightening away small garden birdsAcademics at Imperial College London, the Zoological Society of London and the Natural History Museum monitored the feeding of garden birds, finding they ate less in the presence of the dominant, gregarious parakeets – and stayed away if they saw them. CommentsIf there is a common phrase that all 32 teams use in the NFL draft, it is value. The goal of adding talent to a roster is to get the most bang for your buck, whether it's drafting a promising player or signing an undrafted free agent. This year's draft is loaded with potential value picks because it's so deep at virtually every position. There's a perfect blend of star power at the top and quality depth in the later rounds. In this latest mock draft, here are the best value picks for all 32 first-round selections. 1. No one can deny that Jadeveon Clowney believes in himself, to the point where some label him cocky or arrogant. After his pro day, Jadeveon Clowney is confident he should be the No. 1 pick in NFL Draft. http://t.co/AhAiwHHHLM pic.twitter. Whatever your personal opinion of him is, there's no refuting his amazing talent and upside. The Texans are in a strange position where they need a quarterback, but this freakish athlete who can get after the passer is sitting in their lap. 2. St. If Sam Bradford is going to take the next step or stay upright long enough to prove he can, someone has to protect his blind side. Greg Robinson is a worthy No. 2 pick and can step in right away for an improving Rams team. 3. In a class without an elite quarterback prospect, the Jaguars have their pick of a solid bunch. Blake Bortles doesn't have top-flight arm strength, but the accuracy and touch on his passes, as well as prototypical height at 6'5", make him an excellent fit for a team that has to develop a quarterback. 4. The media made a lot out of Teddy Bridgewater's poor pro day, but Bill Barnwell of Grantland. The entire pre-draft process — but most notably the pro day quarterback workout — is designed to make guys like Bortles look good while hiding the strengths of a player like Bridgewater... And Bortles might very well be a better quarterback than Bridgewater when all is said and done, but I strongly doubt what happened last week gives us any reliable data on whether that’s the case. Having a poor workout in shorts isn't ideal for a job interview in the NFL, but it doesn't erase the evidence that Bridgewater is more than capable of handling himself when the pads are on. 5. Michael Conroy The Raiders have actually done a good job of supplementing their roster in free agency, even with the Rodger Saffold fiasco. They've added quality veterans to cheap one- and two-year deals that don't tie up their salary cap long term. Even though quarterback is still a massive problem, there isn't one worth taking at this spot. Sorry, Johnny Manziel fans, but he's not a top-five pick, especially in a draft this deep. Therefore, the best thing Oakland can do with its first-round pick is find a player who will protect the future quarterback, whoever that may be, for the next decade. Jake Matthews is perfect for what this team needs right now because he has such a high floor and is ready to start from Day 1. 6. The Falcons would love to see Jadeveon Clowney or one of the two tackles get to this spot, but Khalil Mack is a fantastic consolation prize. It's unclear whether the Falcons are switching to a 3-4 defense, although the signing of a player like Tyson Jackson suggests that. Mack is a perfect 3-4 outside linebacker with the ability to drop back in coverage or rush the passer. Either way, he has the kind of talent that a team must find a way to use by any means necessary. 7. Despite their record last year, the Buccaneers aren't far away from being competitive in the NFC South. Josh McCown may not be the long-term solution at quarterback, but having multiple options to choose from is never a bad thing. Something else that isn't bad is having dynamic playmakers on the outside for those quarterbacks to target. Vincent Jackson is a home run threat, so pairing him with do-it-all stud Sammy Watkins would give the Buccaneers a dynamic that no team in the division could stop. 8. Based on the hype that quarterbacks get, Manziel at No. 8 would appear to be a good value for the Vikings. He still has a lot to prove, though people who went nuts after his pro day assume that an MVP award is coming soon. Bottom line: The Vikings need a quarterback, and Manziel will also help sell tickets. He's not without talent, but a player of his size (6'0") who can get reckless on the field has to prove that staying healthy won't be a problem. 9. The Bills went all-in on EJ Manuel last year and got some positive results, but 28 sacks on 306 pass attempts suggest more help is needed up front. Taylor Lewan is a big (6'7", 309 lbs), physical specimen who brings an attitude with him that can have a positive impact on everyone else. Mike Evans is also an option here, but solidifying the right tackle position is equally as important for Buffalo. 10. After addressing wide receiver in free agency, not to mention having plenty of options later in the draft, Lions have to work on a secondary that ranked 20th in yards per attempt and 23rd in pass defense. Justin Gilbert is big (6'0", 202 lbs) and fast (4.37 40-yard dash) and has the ability to get after the ball after it's been thrown. Seattle has proved the value of having a big secondary that can play the ball, so look for a lot of teams to try emulating that style. 11. If you like raw upside, Anthony Barr is the player for you. He's not a refined edge-rusher, to say the least, but he has done nothing but produce since moving to the defensive side of the ball at UCLA two years ago. The Titans need to find players up front who can create pressure, especially since they have to play Andrew Luck twice a year. Barr's ceiling is as high as anyone's in this class, but it will take time to develop. 12. In 3yrs when he can renegotiate his rookie contract, UNC TE Eric Ebron will want to be paid like a WR too. Count on it. Of course, that's a reference to New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham. While Ebron isn't as athletic as the All-Pro, he does have a knack for making big plays thanks to excellent speed and added bulk. The Giants have been looking for a tight end since Eli Manning was in diapers, so having Ebron land in their lap with the No. 12 pick is too good to be true. 13. St. Last year, the Rams added their slot wide receiver in Tavon Austin. This year they can get a true outside threat in the form of Texas A&M's Mike Evans. He's not a burner like Austin, but he has tremendous hands and leaping ability to create big plays. 14. The Bears took care of their need for outside pass-rushers by signing Lamarr Houston and Jared Allen. Now it's time to solidify what was by far the worst run defense in football last year. Chicago allowed 161.4 yards per game on the ground in 2013, 25 more than the next-closest team. Aaron Donald doesn't fit the typical definition of a defensive tackle at 285 pounds, yet he constantly overpowered anyone in his way at college and dazzled with a 4.68 40 time at the combine. 15. The Steelers are in need of a youth injection on the defensive side of the ball. Darqueze Dennard will fit right in with Dick LeBeau's defensive style, bringing an aggressive, physical mentality to a unit that looked slow and old at times last season. 16. It's no secret that the Cowboys have to address their defensive line. They cut DeMarcus Ware and had just 34 sacks last season, 25th in the NFL. They could go for an edge-rusher like Auburn's Dee Ford, but this is a little too high for him. Timmy Jernigan isn't a sure thing by any stretch. He's been inconsistent throughout his career and doesn't have elite strength for the position. But the Florida State product is sneaky quick and has good footwork to move around slower offensive linemen. Eventually Jerry Jones has to make the right pick for the team instead of trying to grab all the headlines with a splashy move. 17. The Ravens invested in a safety last year, drafting Matt Elam in the first round, but they still need to find another player who can drop back in coverage to avoid giving up big plays over the top. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix gives John Harbaugh a lot of versatility, who can rotate him in and out with Elam. The Alabama safety is a dynamic ball hawk who can be an Ed Reed-lite type of player. Which team will get the most bang for its buck in this mock draft? Normally a guard isn't going to go this high, but Rex Ryan has never played by the rules. He's going to do what's in the best interest of his team, which usually involves taking a defensive player. Geno Smith needs help up front to make use of weapons like Eric Decker on the outside. The Jets also need to get back to being more physical up front so they can run the ball effectively and take pressure off Smith's right arm, which was exposed down the stretch last year. After New York signed Chris Johnson to pair with Chris Ivory, Jackson is a logical choice in Round 1. 19. The Dolphins have helped their offensive line already with the addition of Branden Albert, but that's not enough to offset the losses of Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito. Zack Martin doesn't have an elite-level ceiling, but he's polished and will play right away. He's also versatile, which would give the Dolphins options. Miami needs bodies who can keep Ryan Tannehill upright, so someone like Martin should be high on the priority list. 20. We get so caught up in measurables with the NFL draft that it's hard to forget what players do on the field. Jason Verrett doesn't look the part of a first-round cornerback at 5'9", 189 pounds, but put him in pads and he looks like a star who can read the quarterback and play the ball as well as any defensive back in this class. 21. Michael Conroy One reason the Packers have plateaued in recent years is an inability to create pressure up front. B.J. Raji is getting older and less effective. Clay Matthews is the only viable edge-rusher on the team, though he missed the end of last season with a thumb injury. Louis Nix III has been all over the map during the season and throughout the draft process, but he drew rave reviews from Russ Lande of SportsOnEarth. Consistently the first defensive linemen moving at the snap, Nix displays rare foot quickness for a 350-plus pounder. He is able to consistently get backfield penetration to disrupt run plays behind the line. Despite his initial quickness, agility and good hands, he does not rush the quarterback aggressively every snap and gets stuck on the line too often. The Packers need an intimidator up front if they want opponents to respect what they do. Nix is also an excellent fit as a 3-4 defensive tackle and perfect for Dom Capers' scheme. 22. Chip Kelly can add all the speed he wants on offense, but until that secondary can get stops, the Eagles aren't going to be anything more than a team that flirts with the postseason and occasionally sneaks in (see: 2013). Calvin Pryor is the enforcer that Kelly can plug in behind the defense to go after the ball. He also has the speed and strength to play the line and defend the run. 23. Alex Smith will never be a great quarterback, but he can be very good with the right weapons and/or system. Jim Harbaugh and Andy Reid have figured that out the last few years, but the latter needs to bring in another outside weapon to take advantage of his quarterback's strengths. Brandin Cooks is small for an NFL wide receiver (5'9", 189 lbs), but makes up for it with excellent first-step quickness and the best route running of any player at the position in this draft. 24. With the value of outside linebackers soaring in recent years, Ryan Shazier is one of the most underrated players in this class. He's not a workout warrior with great measurables, but he has a great feel for the field and a knack for finding the ball. 25. Hey, an Alabama offensive lineman going in the first round! Cyrus Kouandjio is more power and intensity than polish at this point, but he's so young (20) and has such a high ceiling that getting him at this spot is a steal. The Chargers hit on something special last season under head coach Mike McCoy, who was able to bring out the best Philip Rivers we've ever seen. Now the team needs to keep upgrading its offensive line to make the star quarterback even better and get past Denver in the AFC West. 26. Don't be shocked if the Browns have one of the best offenses in the NFL next year. They may be relying on a rookie quarterback, but with Josh Gordon on one side of the field and Marqise Lee on the other, whoever takes snaps knows he will have open receivers to throw to. Lee is not a burner in the traditional sense, but he has such good footwork and route-running ability that defensive backs can't keep up with him. 27. Hal Yeager Some players have a limited ceiling, but their specialty fits in perfectly with what a team needs. Dee Ford lacks the ability to be a force against the run, so his ability to speed-rush quarterbacks has to carry him in the NFL. Fortunately, this is a pass-happy league that covets edge-rushers. The Saints need to get more speed on the defensive line to keep up in an improving NFC South. 28. After letting all of Cam Newton's weapons from last year walk, the Panthers have to add impact receivers on the outside to avoid falling off a cliff. Kelvin Benjamin isn't a No. 1 receiver in the NFL because of limited speed, but you can't teach height. He is a nightmare for cornerbacks at 6'5", 240 pounds and built like a tight end with the hands and separating skills of a wide receiver. He will be a red-zone threat as soon as he walks in the door. 29. The Patriots dodged a bullet when Vince Wilfork restructured his contract, but it was also a reminder that the 32-year-old is long in the tooth and left the team in a lurch after going down with a season-ending injury after four games last year. Ra'Shede Hageman gives New England flexibility to rotate Wilfork out and keep the big man fresh later in the year. The Minnesota defensive tackle will be the heir apparent when the All-Pro retires or gets released. 30. San Francisco 49ers (12-4): Odell Beckham Jr. There doesn't seem to be a lot of urgency for the 49ers to fix their secondary, so adding a dynamic playmaker on the outside to help Colin Kaepernick's development seems like the best first-round play. Jim Harbaugh's offense already has Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree on the outside. Finding a quality slot receiver will really open things up for this team. Bill Williamson of ESPN. The NFL is a league of three-receiver sets, although the 49ers did not subscribe to that theory. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the 49ers were last in the NFL using three-receiver sets in 2013. They ran three-receiver sets on just 205 snaps. Green Bay ran the most in the NFL with 817 three-receiver sets. Quinton Patton is another receiver that the 49ers like, but he's also had limited exposure and may not be ready to carry the torch of a No. 3 receiver full time in 2014. It also doesn't hurt to have an insurance policy if/when Boldin retires and Crabtree gets hurt again. 31. It's obvious the Broncos are all-in to win this year. They've spent more money than it seems like they had to bring in Aqib Talib, Ware, T.J. Ward and Emmanuel Sanders, just hoping it will be enough to get Peyton Manning a second championship. Any rookies they draft this year aren't likely to see much playing time, so Bradley Roby will be a wise pick for John Elway. The Ohio State product needs time to adjust to the speed of the NFL since he's used to attacking the ball instead of reading quarterbacks. 32. It appeared Davante Adams' stock was going to drop following a 4.57 40-yard dash at the combine, but the Fresno State receiver rebounded nicely with a 4.47 time at the school's pro day in March. The Seahawks don't have many holes to worry about, so they can play with this pick. The loss of Golden Tate does make it easier for Pete Carroll to add another playmaker on the outside with the final pick of the first round. Note: All free-agent signing info according to NFL.com.
