More headlines »"Game of Thrones" returned on Sunday night, and in the aftermath of King Joffrey Baratheon's murder, Tyrion found himself in trouble, Tywin forged a new alliance, and there was a disturbing interaction between Cersei and Jaime. Sansa sailed free with someone who appeared to be involved in Joffrey's death, Jon Snow warned The Wall again of Mance Rayder, and The Hound broke his code in Season 4, Episode 3 - "Breaker of Chains. The Wedding Banquet, King's Landing: "You did this," Cersei screams at Tyrion, as she cradles her dead son, King Joffrey. In the chaos of the moment, Ser Dontos grabs Sansa and they bolt. A moment later, Cersei notices Sansa is missing. "Bar the gates of the city. Seize every ship in the harbor," Tywin shouts. "The two of them did it. I know it. Where is she?" Cersei screams. Bells toll across the capitol as Sansa runs for her life, down passageways and stairs, and into a tiny boat. Ser Dontos assures Sansa he's taking her somewhere safe, as he rows her out to what looks like a lifeless ship. 'Game Of Thrones' Cast On Jack Gleeson Vs. It is anything but. At the top of the ship's rope ladder, a man grabs Sansa's shoulders and helps her over. "Lord Baelish," Sansa says, quite stunned to see Littlefinger. "Peytr," he tells her to call him. "I'm sure you had quite a fright. Rest easy," he adds. In the boat below, Ser Dontos prepares to say his goodbyes (so he can get back before someone notices), when Littlefinger reminds him to collect his fee - 10,000. Instead, he gets an arrow through the head. "You don't want the queen to hear, do you?" Petyr tells Sansa when she screams. "A thousand gold cloaks are searching for you. And if they found you? How do you think they'd punish the girl who murdered the king," he asks her. "You must admit it looks suspicious. The King who executed your father, tormented you for years, and you fled the scene of his murder," Littlefinger points out. "Why did you kill him?" Sansa says, not referring to Joffrey, but Ser Dontos. "Because he was a drunk and a fool and I don't trust drunk fools," Littlefinger says, informing Sansa that Ser Dontos followed his orders - for coin. "Money buys a man's silence for a time; a bolt in the heart buys it forever," he says. He goes on to reveal that the family necklace Ser Dontos gave Sansa previously was something Peytr had made recently. "You're safe with me, sailing home," Littlefinger adds. Margaery & Lady Olenna, King's Landing: Sitting overlooking the sea, Margaery is feeling cursed. Both of her husbands have died (Renly and Joffrey). "Nonsense, your circumstances have improved remarkably," Lady Olenna says. "You may not have enjoyed watching him die, but you enjoyed it more than you would have enjoyed being married to him." To cheer her granddaughter up, Lady Olenna hints at something. "Our alliance with the Lannisters remains every bit as necessary for them as it remains unpleasant for us. You did wonderful work on Joffrey," Lady Olenna says. "The next one should be easier. The Lannisters, King's Landing: Standing next to his grieving mother, Tommen Baratheon looks at his late brother, King Joffrey, whose remains are laid out on a table. Asked what the moment means, by Tywin, Tommen says he knows he will now be crowned king. In order to be a good king, he needs wisdom most - and to listen to his counselors and advisers, who can help him do what's best, Tywin tells his grandson. "Now, as the king, you'll have to marry. Do you understand why?" Tywin says, leading Tommen off to explain the birds and the bees. Dismissing the men watching over Joffrey's body, Jaime Lannister enters the room and walks up to Cersei. "It was Tyrion. He killed him," Cersei tells Jaime, before asking him to, "avenge our son," by killing their brother. Jaime says the trial will get to the truth, but Cersei is convinced Tyrion will "squirm his way to freedom. ... I want him dead," she says pleading and crying. Jaime hugs her close and after a moment, Cersei kisses him, before quickly pulling away. "You're a hateful woman. Why have the gods made me love a hateful woman," Jaime says, spinning Cersei around to face him. He kisses her hard and starts unwrapping her dress as she stands with her back to Joffrey's displayed remains. As Jaime rips her clothing, Cersei tells him to stop. She starts to give in, and then changes her mind again. "It's not right," she says, as Jaime takes her, on the floor, just beneath Joffrey's lifeless body. "I don't care," Jaime says. Arya & The Hound, Near Fairmarket: How close are they to the Eyrie, where Arya's aunt Lysa lives? The Hound doesn't know, but he's not trying to delay their journey. "Believe me girl, I want you there as soon as I can. Get my gold, be on my way," he tells her, suggesting he might end up fighting as a sellsword for the Second Sons (note - the group Daario originally came from). Thinking about her own future, Arya suggests she'd like to visit Braavos one day, a place she has friends (a reference to Season 2's Jaqen H'ghar). Before she can explain any further, a man and his daughter spot them. Arya handles the situation, explaing The Hound (she calls him her "father"), fought for The Tullys of Riverrun (Catelyn Stark's family). Pleased to hear it, the man invites them over for rabbit stew. After eating, conversing and The Hound agreeing to stay to help with farm work and fending off the Freys (as in Walder Frey) who are plundering and stealing, Arya gets some rest. The next morning, she's woken by screams. Running outside she sees the man has been knocked to the ground and The Hound is walking away with his silver. "You told me you weren't a thief," Arya screams. "He's a good man, his daughter makes a nice stew, and they'll both be dead come winter," The Hound explains. "You're the worst sh** in the Seven Kingdoms," an outraged Arya spits back. "There's plenty worse than me. I just understand the way things are. How many Stark's they got to behead before you figure it out?" The Hound asks her. Davos Seaworth & Stannis Baratheon, Dragonstone: "I am now faced with a great opportunity, and I am powerless to take advantage of it," Stannis tells Davos as news arrives of Joffrey's death (he's still furious at Davos for saving Gendry, the royal bastard Melisandre was going to sacrifice in Season 3 for Stannis' political gain). Angry that Davos has only rallied a few Houses to his side, he grows even angrier when Davos suggests they get sellswords, or an army from across the sea. "We're willing to use blood magic to put you on the throne, but we're not willing to pay men to fight?" Davos asks. It doesn't matter anyway. They have no gold. "If I do not press my claim, my claim will be forgotten. I will not become a page in someone else's history book," Stannis tells him. "I'm running out of time, Ser Davos, which means you're running out of time. In the bowels of Dragonstone, while meeting for his regular reading lesson with Stannis' daughter, Shireen, Davos gets an idea for how to get that gold, and asks the girl to write a letter, "To the officers of the Iron Bank of Braavos, from Stannis Baratheon, the one true King of Westeros. Samwell & Gilly, Mole's Town: In order to protect her from the men at The Wall, Sam brings Gilly to an establishment in Mole's Town for room and board only. "No other work," he insists to the woman running the house. Prince Oberyn, King's Landing: Mid-orgy, the door to the brothel opens. "May we have the room," Tywin says, sending the participants to the exit, leaving just Oberyn and Tywin in the room. Alone, Tywin presses Oberyn to tell him what he discussed with Tyrion at the brothel, previously. It was the death of his sister Elia, Oberyn tells him, an act he blames Tywin for (and which Tywin denies involvement in). Vengeance in his heart, Oberyn asks for a meeting with The Mountain (the man who killed Elia), and Tywin proposes a deal -- serve as a judge in Tyrion's trial, and he'll set it up. And there is another reveal - he wants Oberyn on the Small Council for the new king. Daenerys Targaryen has three dragons, and only Oberyn's people - the Dornish -- were able to resist dragons in the past. "We need each other. You help me serve justice to the King's assassins and I'll help you serve justice to Elia's," Tywin says holding out his hand. Tyrion, Podrick, King's Landing: After removing the contraband he had hidden away in his leathers and fabrics, Pod breaks the latest news to Tyrion - he'll stand trial in two weeks for a crime he didn't commit. And Pod has more news -- Oberyn will be one of the judges. The discussion turning to potential defense witnesses, Tyrion learns Sansa has been missing since Joffrey's death. "The girl's no assassin. Whoever killed the King wanted me to lose my head for it, and with my wife's disappearance, it makes me seem that much more guilty," Tyrion notes. Unable to see Bronn (who is under suspicion now), Tyrion asks Pod to ask Jaime to come visit him. Heading out of the cell, Pod stops and turns. "There's something else," the young man says. He's been asked to testify against Tyrion (in exchange for being named a Ser). Concern fills Tyrion's face. "If I have to take that long walk to the executioner's block, I don't want to see your head already mounted," he tells the young man. "Get yourself out of King's Landing before it's too late. Pod, this is farewell. A Village In The North: Wildling attack! A young man runs and hides as Ygritte, Tormund Giantsbane and those cannibal Thenns tear apart a village, slashing the people with swords and knives. A hand reaches under a wagon, grabbing a young boy trying to hide from the carnage. Styr, the leader of the Thenn, tells the boy he will kill his parents, and eat them afterward. "Go tell the Crows at Castle Black," Styr says, releasing the terrified boy. The Night's Watch, The Wall: Arguments erupt over how to retaliate against the Wildlings, as the boy stands at Jon Snow's side. Maester Aemon reminds them they are "the watchers on The Wall," and Ser Alliser Thorne turns to Jon for his thoughts. "Mance Rayder is coming. If the Wildlings breach The Wall, they'll roll over everything and everyone for a thousand miles before they reach an army that can stop them," he says. Ser Alliser Thorne surprisingly agrees - they'll sure up Castle Black. Horns sound in the distance. It's Grenn and Edd arriving back at Castle Black, having barely survived the mutiny at Craster's Keep, where former Night's Watch man Karl is now running things. "We need to ride North and kill them all," Jon says, worried. "I told the Wildlings we had over a thousand men at Castle Black alone. Karl and the others know the truth as well as we do. How long do you think they'll keep that information to themselves when the Wildlings are peeling their fingernails off?" Jon says. "Mance has all he needs to crush us, he just doesn't know it yet. Once he gets his hands on them, he will. Daenerys, Outside The Gates Of Mereen: A light appears through the gates of the city as Dany and her army stand outside of Mereen. The champion of the city has come out to face hers. Dany's most loyal (Grey Worm, Ser Jorah and Ser Barristan) offer their services, but she refuses all of them due to their value. She doesn't refuse Daario Naharis, who offers to fight for her. Mereen's champion laughs, and urinates in front of her forces, before mounting his horse and charging at Daario who just stands in the dust. Aware he isn't moving, Dany shoots Daario a worried glance. He grins, turns back, quietly pulls out his knife, puts it on his shoulder, and kisses it. "Argh," he grunts, flinging the knife into the horse's eye. The great stallion falls, his rider with him. Whipping out his curved blade, he kills Mereen's champion who rolls to his feet in the dust. Daario turns to Dany and nods. Outraged, the Mereen soldiers fire their arrows toward Dany's people (none of them reach her army). In turn, Daario urinates on the ground, shocking those in Mereen. The contest over, Dany speaks. "Your enemy is beside you," she tells the slaves of Mereen. "I bring you a choice and I bring your enemies what they deserve," she says as giant catapults are rolled forward. "Fire!" she cries, as barrels are chucked at Mereen's city walls. Breaking open, their contents - broken collars - spill onto Mereen's streets. A slave in his collar picks one up and turns to look at his master. ADVERTISEMENTUTICA — Editors note: This is the first of several Advocate articles marking the 100th anniversary of Velvet Ice Cream. This story profiles several employees who work in production, making the ice cream that appears in freezers throughout the state. In the 15 years he’s worked at Velvet Ice Cream, Ken Harold hasn’t had to say goodbye to many of his co-workers. “There’s not much turnover here; people get going here and they stay,” he said. “The employees are a big family, and when they become a part of the family, it’s hard to separate them. People seem to get excited when Harold tells them he works as plant manger at Velvet. But many don’t realize how much it takes for a dozen employees to produce the 5 million gallons of ice cream made every year at the Utica facility. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun too,” he said. Harold started working in the dairy industry in 1975 and came to Velvet in 1999. Every day, he oversees the daily operation of the plant and works closely with his officemate Dan Dickson, who focuses on quality control and production planning. A food engineer, Dickson makes sure all the employees are following Velvet’s safety plan and procedures. It’s up to him to schedule when each flavor is made and make sure the plant has enough ingredients. Both men agreed one of the best aspects of their job is researching and developing new flavors. One of their wildest creations was the special maple bacon ice cream that was made last summer for the Ohio State Fair. “The end result always puts a smile on people’s face,” Harold said. When Brian Neighbarger began working at Velvet in 1980, the production area was much smaller and the freeze tunnel, where the ice cream is stored until it hardens, wasn’t there. The Utica man worked his way up to production supervisor and spends his days overseeing the quality of the products. “You have to make sure it’s done right. You can’t stop thinking for a second,” he said. “It’s a challenge every day. Another longtime employee, Dan Young started with Velvet 20 years ago. His main responsibility in the plant is adding flavors and inclusions such as candy, fudge or caramel, which are mixed into the ice cream. Young said he enjoys the job because every day is different. Some days, he helps with a basic flavor such as chocolate or vanilla, whereas other days, he has to add a lot of ingredients. Although things can get hectic, everyone works well together, he said. “I’ve made a few lifelong friends being here as long as I have,” he said. Jeweletta Horne and her mother Emma Miller are some of the newest employees in production. Miller has worked as a production associate for about a year and a half and recommended Horne apply for an open position six months ago. “We work as a group here, as a family,” Miller said. “If anyone needs help, someone is right there. Every day, they both inspect and package products. Horne said she likes finding out about new flavors before anyone else and working with her mom. “We get along. We have a good relationship,” she said. Miller said she appreciates working in a positive atmosphere every day. “Who wouldn’t want to do this?” she said. “We are making people smile by making them ice cream. advocate. Sailing. GW Sailing Excels at America's Trophy Tune Up

The GW sailing team finished in sixth place out of 20 teams at the Admirals Cup in Kings Point, N.Y., the same site for next weekend's America's Trophy MAISA Coed Championship. The Colonials also posted an eighth-place showing out of 14 teams at the MAISA Women's Championship in Ithaca, N.Y., and ninth-place finish out of 16 teams at the Greater New York Dinghy Regatta in Bronx, N.Y. At the Admirals Cup, GW totaled 345 points over 14 races in three divisions of racing to finish in sixth. "We did fantastic and beat a lot of national-level teams which bodes very well for the MAISA Championship next weekend," said Head Coach John Pearce. The A Division trio of freshman Brendan Shanahan and juniors Jennifer Wilson and Matthew Ricci recorded five top-five finishes, second in Races 7 and 10, to place fifth with 111 points. In B Division, freshman Daniel DelBello and junior Meagan Murphy had six top-five showings with wins in Races 2 and 12 en route to eighth with 134 points. Freshman Colin Kennedy also had six top fives with a second in the Race 14 finale on his way to 100 points and fifth in the singlehanded C Division. GW amassed 198 points over 14 races at the MAISA Women's Championship to finish just 13 points shy of a top-six finish for a qualfying spot in the ICSA Women's National Championship. Georgetown totaled 100 points to claim the conference title with Navy, Old Dominion, Cornell, Hobart and William Smith, and Fordham also capturing spots in ICSA Nationals. "It was a very competitive regatta and we were right in the mix in a tight fleet, but didn't adapt to the conditions as well as we could have," said Coach Pearce. Sophomore Hannah McNomee and senior Erin McCormack registered four top fives with third in Races 7 and 8 en route to eighth place in A Division with 98 points. Sophomore Maria Sinagra, junior Alex Hitchcock, senior Kaitlin Denney and freshman Gabriella Malek teamed for a 10th-place showing in B Division with 100 points, including five top fives with wins in Races 10 and 12. Across the Long Island Sound from the MAISA Women's Championship, GW totaled 91 points over six races on Saturday to place ninth at the Greater New York Dinghy Regatta. Sophomore Jay Spector and senior Sarah McCormack won Race 4 and placed second in Race 5 on their way to eighth in A Division with 47 points. The B Division duo of sophomores Benjamin Helfand and Henry Young came in seventh in B Division with 44 points. The Colonials will now seek to improve on last year's 12th-place showing and climb into the top eight at the America's Trophy to secure the program's first-ever berth in the ICSA National Championship. ZTE Wins Orders from China Mobile for Optical Network Equipment

American Cultures requirement celebrates 25th anniversary

Administration proposes changes to student grievance procedure, accepting feedback UC administrator salaries lag behind competition Twenty-five years ago, the American Cultures requirement was introduced to UC Berkeley as a new curriculum to encourage students to think critically about the changing nature of society. This week, the campus will celebrate the AC requirement’s anniversary with various talks and symposiums. Today, the program offers courses across more than 40 different departments and multiple disciplines, aiming to present new perspectives on culture, race and society in varying subjects. Introduced in 1989 and implemented in the fall of 1991, the AC requirement was influenced by an increase in minorities in student demographics and the anti-apartheid movement on campus. As students protested on campus to show their support of ending the apartheid regime in South Africa, they looked at their own campus and wanted to apply the same social justice principles closer to home. “Students begin thinking about how the curriculum itself could represent, more equitably, the changing demographics of the world and … definition of multiculturalism,” said Victoria Robinson, coordinator of the American Cultures program and ethnic studies lecturer. Most of the AC courses offered are concentrated in the humanities and social science departments of the College of Letters and Science; however, Robinson sees potential in expanding the curriculum toward the technical fields. For example, “Engineering, The Environment, and Society” is an AC interdisciplinary course that explores the intersection of engineering and social justice, encouraging students to not only recognize problems, but also find solutions. Robinson said she hopes to see AC courses in the future in math or applied statistics as well. Currently, proposals for potential AC courses are reviewed and endorsed by an Academic Senate subcommittee. Composed of seven faculty members and two appointed ASUC representatives, the committee ensures that the courses address issues relevant to understanding race, culture and ethnicity; relate to the larger issues such as history, economy or environment; and engage with at least three ethnic groups. In the past 2 1/2 years, the AC program has introduced 36 new courses for the requirement, according to Robinson. During the 2012-13 year, five out of five new AC courses were approved, while thirteen out of sixteen were approved the year before. The concept of an AC requirement is now instituted in many universities across the country, including eight other UC campuses. Rahul Patel, second-year intended computer sciences major, took an integrative biology class on human biological variation that brought historical and cultural perspectives to not only analyze racism throughout history, but also connect it to contemporary issues. “I gained an interesting historical perspective on science in our society — how it can have huge social implications, and how it can almost be skewed to fit an agenda,” he said. “(The class) helped me understand society as a whole. And it’s not over yet: there’s still a month to go before the CBS drama’s season finale. “It’s been a highly traumatic year!” says Baranski, 61, finally taking a breather just days after wrapping the fifth season. “But I found it breathtaking. Particularly the episodes centering around Will’s death, which were prompted after Charles decided he wanted to leave the show. Baranski first got wind of Charles’s plans when he spoke to her last spring as they finished up their fourth season, which found their firm Lockhart/Gardner trying to emerge from bankruptcy. “I know he was somewhat dissatisfied after the fourth season, that somehow the work hadn’t been challenging enough,” recalls Baranski. “We had a lot of guest stars who were coming on and doing dazzling work, but I think he was restless and had the option to leave. Up until the very end, I kept thinking he would change his mind. She was hopeful that Charles would be swayed by the enthusiastic reaction to the season’s thrilling first half, in which Alicia and Cary departed the firm and Will and Diane dealt with their betrayal. “Critics and the viewing public were suddenly paying major attention to the show again,” she says. “People were exhilarated by the whole thing. And Josh was doing just stellar work. I kept holding out hope that he would say, ‘You know, this is pretty swell here and the work is fulfilling.’ But he had made up his mind and stuck to it. While Baranski had heard early on from creators/showrunners Robert and Michelle King that Will would be killed off, that didn’t make it any easier for her to read the fateful script when it arrived in December. “I had trouble getting through it,” she says. “I had it over Christmas and I kept trying to read it, and then I’d stop, knowing that this was the episode where it was gonna happen. I was almost in denial. And then there was one morning where I was well-rested and it was quiet in the house, and I said, ‘I’m just gonna do this. The first three-quarters of the episode were structured like a normal court case, but “suddenly the moment came and our stage directions indicated what was going on. And I just even couldn’t see the page, I was just awash in tears,” she recalls. “Then I put the script down and I didn’t even pick it up until after Christmas. When the day came in January to shoot the scene where Diane and Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) discover Will’s lifeless body (until that point, most viewers assumed he would somehow pull through), Baranski made sure to keep her distance from Charles. “When you play scenes like that that are very dramatic, it has to happen to you. They’re reactive in nature, so you can lay a groundwork but you can’t plan how you’re going to react,” she explains. “Josh is on the set the whole time in his trailer but we did not even say hello. He was simply prepared behind the curtain, and then we did a few takes of walking in and seeing it. It was extremely challenging to do, so I’m glad it’s over. But her toughest work was still to come: the March 30 episode “The Last Call,” where a grieving Diane and the other characters try to process Will’s death and break the news to everyone else. “Christine had taken Diane Lockhart to such a strong place right now, we wanted to see how she would handle holding a business together in the face of her worst fears,” says Robert King. “That was absolutely brutal, because I had two full days where I just had scene after scene of crying and sobbing,” says Baranski, including one draining moment that was dropped from the finished episode. “At the end of one shooting day, there was yet another scene I had to do where I was sitting alone in my office, sobbing. We did take after take and it didn’t make it into the final cut but that was a big, big, emotional day because, you know, crying take after take is like laughing: it only works if it’s real. But the Kings were most impressed by how Baranski deftly pulled off one of the lighter moments in the hour, when Diane dismissed one of Will’s clients who had immediately threatened to change firms after hearing of his death. “A lot of actors can cry, but we love that scene where Christine fires one of her clients,” says Michelle King. “She is such a great mix of strength and humor. Still, even a seasoned pro like Baranski wasn’t been prepared for what was required of her in those episodes. “I’ve done so much comedy and I’ve done drama now, but I’ve got to be honest, never in my career have I been called upon to do that kind of work in front of the camera,” she says. “It was hard, but what a privilege to be able to go to that place of deep, deep sorrow and pain and trauma. After all that crying, Baranski reveled in the April 13 episode, “A Material World,” which opened with a scene in which Diana and Alicia unwound and got drunk together after attending Will’s funeral. “I think the writers have done something quite brilliant, because you wouldn’t want to continue to watch everybody crying,” Baranski says. “Laughing hysterically or getting drunk is another way of processing extreme pain. While Baranski loved the scene, she took issue with the time at which it was filmed. “I so often have to shoot very dramatic scenes at like 2 in the morning. And it’s like, you’ve got to be kidding, do we really have to shoot this scene so late? And yet that drunk scene is exactly the kind of scene you’d want to shoot as the last shot of the night on a Friday at 2 a.m. when you’re punchy with fatigue and you’re a little loosey-goosey,” says Baranski. “And instead, you know when we shot it? The first thing Monday, crack of dawn, in a restaurant that was a block from my house on the Upper East Side. That’s not the last time we’ll see Diane’s comedic side this season, Baranski says. In the May 18 season finale, titled “A Weird Year,” “I had a scene where it’s scripted that Diane laughs. I took the laughter way further, and started literally guffawing,” she says. “It just felt so real because I thought, with everything Diane’s been through, how great to end the season with her letting out deep belly laughs over the absurdity of what has been one thing after another. And so I found myself heaving with laughter. They just kept the cameras rolling, and I hope they use it. On set, Charles’s—and Will’s—absence “is a terrible loss for me,” says Baranski. “He was my main acting partner and I also think we had a great on-camera relationship because it was one of those wonderful male-female relationships that was never gonna be romantic, and yet curiously they were really good together. Robert King always said that was the happy marriage in the show. So that was like losing a spouse, because he was truly my partner. Also, Josh and I both have this great, wicked sense of humor. We would razz each other mercilessly on the set. We loved talking sports and we’d laugh a lot. He was a person that was just so easy on the set and so fun, and it would translate on- and off-camera. That’s the kind of colleague you want. Baranski did get to reunite with Charles when he returned to direct the April 27 episode (he’d previously directed twice). “It was comforting. I think we all needed some kind of closure,” says Baranski. “And I think for him it was very important to reconnect with his colleagues. Because I think it’s a very difficult thing to do to walk away from a show where it’s a family. She also continued her annual ritual with Margulies and Charles, toasting the season’s end at a West Village burger joint. “I was just with him at the Minetta Tavern, having a martini and a burger,” she says. “We always do that at the end of the season. Julianna and her husband and Josh and I, we just have a well-deserved, big, fat, old meal and a few drinks. As the season barrels towards its conclusion, Diane will continue clashing with Lockhart/Gardner partner David Lee (Zach Grenier) over their firm’s future. The big question in the remaining episodes, says Robert King, is “how does Diane deal with a firm that is on the brink of falling apart? And how does she do it alone? She used to rely on Will to be the cunning one. Now she has to become more Will-like. It’s incredible to see this transition in Christine. Baranski was also tickled by Elisabeth Moss’s recent interview in which the actress said she saw Diane Lockhart as the kind of woman that Mad Men’s Peggy Olson would grow up to become. “It’s so cool!” says Baranski. “First of all, I think she’s so great on the show, but the point is just so well taken that in that era a woman couldn’t do what a Diane Lockhart does now. And now the world is filled with Diane Lockharts in all walks of life. Women are still fighting for equal pay—go figure!—but there’s been progress and I think the strength of the Diane character is seeing someone who actually got to the top. She works for it, she sacrificed and she’s successful, and she has enough money to spend it on her clothes and her quality of life. It matters to her. As chaotic as the season’s second half was, its first part was a different kind of whirlwind for Baranski, who spent all fall shuttling between The Good Wife’s New York City sets and London, where she filmed the big-screen musical version of Into the Woods. She plays Cinderella’s stepmother in the film, due out Dec. 25, which reunited Baranski with both her Chicago director Rob Marshall and her Mamma Mia! costar Meryl Streep, who plays The Witch. “How many actors can say they’ve done not one but two movie musicals with Meryl Streep?!?” says a giddy Baranski. “She and I were so thrilled. Meryl could not be more fun to hang out with. Into the Woods is the adaptation of the 1987 Steven Sondheim musical, which mashes together several of Grimms’ Fairy Tales. “Somehow my producers on both ends worked it out that I literally commuted back and forth,” says Baranski. One time, in fact, she made the trip to deliver a single line. “It was a carriage scene where we were on our way to the ball and the Baker asks for help and he climbs on our carriage. And I push him off and say, ‘Mongrel!’ And it was such a joke on the set that I flew all the way to London to say one word. But it was a pleasure and a privilege. Baranski feels the same way about her Good Wife job. “Over the course of many years you get to tell a lot of stories and show a lot of different aspects of your talent as an actor, so I think it’s the greatest gig,” she says. Especially considering The Good Wife is the rare—many would say, only—network show that holds its own with high-quality cable dramas. “It’s a miracle that Wife is a CBS show and it can compete with any of those cable shows,” she says. “And it’s a very different tone because it’s subtle, it’s intelligent, it doesn’t rely on a lot of grandiosity. It doesn’t rely on violence. It doesn’t rely on sex scenes and women being abused or used as sex objects. It’s a sophisticated show and I hope that it’s recognized for its tremendous worth. I’m just really proud to be on it. That said, she’s also happy to spend her hiatus decompressing after a grueling season. “I love my family deeply. I have this beautiful grandson now, and I also have a home on a lake,” she says. “I’m actually looking forward to reading books. I love to read poetry and try to memorize poetry on my hiatus so that I keep my memorization skills going. So I go out in a canoe and repeat verses over and over and try and learn poems. We have a beautiful house where in the morning you can sit on the dock and see the sun rise and at night you watch the sun set. It’s just as good as it gets. Plus, she’s already looking forward to whatever is in store for Diane next year. “When I talk to our head writers, they seem more jazzed than ever,” she says. “I think this thing that happened this year fueled them creatively. Musician lived for family, Croatian heritage

Published: Sunday, April 20, 2014, 10:36 p.m. An inductee into the hall of fame of the Tamburitza Association of America, Billy Cvetnic once received an unwanted assist from a waitress. He was getting ready to hit the highest note of his signature song, “Lost Lamb,” in an Ohio club when a waitress pinched him. “He went a little bit higher,” his buddy and bandmate Bob “Butch” Baburich said with a laugh. “After that, I had to stand behind him with the bass facing him so nobody could get behind him. Following in his father's footsteps, Mr. Cvetnic played Croatian folk music in clubs all over the country and once performed for then-King Peter of Yugoslavia in the Roosevelt Hotel in Pittsburgh. William J. Cvetnic of Chalfant died at UPMC McKeesport on Thursday, April 17, 2014, exactly two years after his wife, Sandra, passed away. He was 84. He was born Nov. 4, 1929, to Joseph and Rose Cvetnic. His father worked for Westinghouse Electric in East Pittsburgh, and his mother was a homemaker. His father played with the Sloboda Tamburitza Orchestra of East Pittsburgh during the 1920s and '30s. Mr. Cvetnic joined the Nick Naglich Orchestra while he was attending the former Turtle Creek High School. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War in 1951 and served in Japan. He retired as a mechanical engineer from Aetna Standard Engineering Co. and later started a business, Mr. Bill's Home Remodeling. But his passion was Croatian music. He played a variety of tambura, stringed instruments, but mostly the bugarija, a sort of guitar, and the ukulele-like prim. Often, when he was not playing the instruments, he was making them as a hobby. He played with the Balkan Four, Danny Kukich Orchestra, Balkan Serenaders, Dunav and Novi Glas. Mr. Cvetnic was not one to be easily ruffled. A man with a gun once entered a club in Akron, Ohio, and was looking for the man who was cheating with his wife. The crowd wrestled him to the ground, and the police arrested him. “The bartender said, ‘Keep playing, keep playing, keep playing.' We didn't miss a beat that I can remember,” Baburich said. One of the women who often attended his performances was the former Sandra Yoha. The couple was married for 32 years. About 10 years ago, she fell off the deck of their home and had difficulty walking. “The last two years (of her life) were really difficult, and he was a good caregiver for her,” said his sister-in-law, Patsy Krenicky of West Mifflin. “He did the washing, the cleaning, the shopping. She would supervise, and he would cook. In addition to his wife, Mr. Cvetnic was preceded in death by his sisters, Caroline Polesnak and Betty Palocsko. Survivors include his son, Dr. William D. Cvetnic of Florida. Friends will be welcomed from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home, Turtle Creek/Monroeville Chapel, 1111 Monroeville Ave. at James St., Turtle Creek, where a blessing service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday. 118th Boston Marathon: Stories from Hampshire County

Amherst native Allison Wade, 39, hasn't run a marathon in 10 years, but she will run the Boston Marathon for Team MR8 of the Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation. Nancy Cook, of Belchertown, will run the Boston Marathon for a 10 time Monday. Jim Duda, 59 of Pelham, is running his first marathon Monday. Duda is raising money for Credit Unions Kids at Heart, a charity for Boston Children's Hispital. Jenkins ran her first marathon last year, but didn't finish the race because of the bombings near the finish line. Jenkins is back this year to finish what she started. The 118th Boston Marathon is set to become the second largest in race history as over 36,000 runners are expected to make the journey from Hopkinton to Copley Square on Monday. The increased field is due to last year’s twin bombings that killed three and injury over 260, causing the race to be stopped shortly after the four hour mark with over 5,000 runners still on the course. The Boston Athletic Association invited those runners back to finish and made extra bib numbers available to charities and qualified runners to signify that last year’s events wouldn’t diminish the race’s character. Within the increased field are 74 registered runners from Hampshire County and more with ties to the region. Alison Wade, who was on Amherst Regional’s first state cross country championship team, has since relocated to the eastern side of the state. A once avid marathoner, Wade is running her first since having twins three years ago. She is a member of the Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation team. Alex Silverman of Northampton last ran Boston 30 years ago. He’s back after qualifying at the Lehigh Valley Marathon to run as part of runner solitude. South Hadley’s Jodi Fairbanks set out last year looking to run her first marathon, but didn’t get to finish. Others are running with similar mindsets, but their own reasons. Here are those stories and a few others. Use their bib numbers to track them along the course at baa.org on Marathon Monday. Charity: Martin W. Bib No. Wade, 39, thought she retired from marathons. Then, like so many others, last year’s Boston Marathon bombings triggered a response . She made the decision to be involved in this year’s race, but the question remained how. “When the bombs happened, I knew I wanted to be apart of 2014 marathon,” she said. The tragedy claimed the life of 8-year-old Martin Richard. Wade is one of 100 runners on Team MR8, raising money for the Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation. “I’m making some good from the bad stuff that happened last year,” she said. Wade, who has 3-year-old twin girls, decided Martin was her cause and it was good enough to get her back out on the pavement. “That was the story that came out of the 2013 race that struck a cord with me the most,” she said. “It stood out as so incredibly sad. The second bomb claimed Martin’s life, and injured his parents and younger sister, Jane. His older brother, Henry, escaped unscathed. Bill and Denise Richard founded the nonprofit to honor their son and his message of peace through education, athletics and community. Before this year, running for a cause had never really struck Wade as something to do. She was a runner and felt odd asking for people to help support her in something she found joy in and did so regularly, but this foundation was different. “This was an important enough cause for me,” Wade said. “As a parent, you can’t even imagine what it’s like to lose a child. Every time I encounter the Richard family, I don’t understand how they are handling this with such strength. This will be her second attempt at Boston. She pulled out of the 2005 race before her running hiatus. She won the 2003 Marine Marathon and is hoping to not over do it in her return to the sport. “I’ve never ran a marathon as well as I thought I could,” Wade said. “This year, I’m hoping to run a more conservative pace than I think I can run, (around) low 3:20s. Wade’s Natick home is only a mile from the course and last year’s events, and this year’s resilience, hit close to home. “I’ve always loved the Boston marathon, but I think living here has sort of amplified it a bit more,” Wade said. “Everyday there are marathon reminders around here. ... It’s a lot of things you take personal. You think that this stuff doesn’t happen here and yet it did. Bib No. Klieg began running at age 50 when he ran his first marathon 13 years ago. When he laces up his shoes on Marathon Monday, it’ll be the 50th time he’s running 26.2 miles. “Boston is really special,” Klieg said. “Boston is just special. There is nowhere better than Boston to run a marathon. This year’s marathon means a lot to him and has a lot of emotion attached — his 50th marathon will be his 10th Boston and will be in the shadow of last year. “It’s kind of special, because when I crossed last year, it was 14 minutes before the blast,” he said. Upon finishing with a qualifying time for the 2014 race, he knew he was approaching the No. 50 milestone, but he wasn’t sure where he’d run the big one. “I wanted to make it special,” Klieg said. Minutes later he knew. Having finished at roughly the same time as the bombs, Klieg said his friends instantly worried about his safety. Eventually, one tracked him down grabbing a drink at a nearby bar, not completely aware of everything that had happened. He heard the explosion, but didn’t think the worst, as he continued going in the opposite direction and didn’t see any of the chaos. “The memory is there, but I’m looking forward to going through it again, especially for the 10th time,” he said. “When I hear a loud noise, sometimes I think of it. Klieg has dedicated his run to his friend Chase, who is battling an aggressive form of cancer, and for all those effect by the bombings. “I’m just doing it out of respect of the people that got hurt there,” Klieg said. “The pain I’m going to feel from running 26.2 miles is nothing what they felt. Bib No. Cook, 49, left last year’s Boston Marathon mentally going through the “what ifs. She was running on a bad knee and thought she was going to run a conservative four-hour marathon. That morning her knee felt fine and she was ready to get on the course. She finished in 3:40:31, well before the bombs went off. “It hits home that it could have been us,” Cook said. “To be there and be a part of all the energy and celebration, all of that will certainly be emotional. Cook isn’t a stranger to the Boston Marathon. This will be her fifth consecutive and 10th overall. In 2007, she ran a personal best 3:05:59, earning her a Masters title. “It’ll be interesting to how different a race it will be since I’ve been involved with it for so many years,” Cook said. As a cancer survivor, she said she keeps running because she can. Running helped her through chemotherapy as she completed the 2010 Chicago Marathon while undergoing treatment. Some years she raises money for the American Cancer Society, but this year she is running with the Western Massachusetts Distance Project. If the top Masters on the team run well, Cook said they could be a top-five team at the end of the day. Cook’s competitive nature also helps keep her going. She runs Boston every year that she qualifies and at other races, she consistently places in the top portion of her age group. The Boston Marathon “is my favorite. To qualify and be a part of it every year it really renews my spirit,” Cook said. “As long as I qualify, I’ll be running that marathon. They call it the grand daddy of them all ... there’s nothing else like Boston. Bib Nos. The Reises have spent the last five years as a father-daughter racing duo and Boston will be their second marathon together. They are hitting the pavement thanks to the Sugarloaf Mountain Athletic Club’s lottery, but will be running in memory of Martin Richard and all those effected by last year’s bombings. “We are trying to honor the people that were killed and wounded and just wanted to be part of the special race,” Jim Reis said. “(Martin) was an amazingly sad story. Through the lottery both earned non-qualifying bibs and found out the day after Christmas, just as training season opened during a rough winter. “We were ecstatic, it was our best Christmas present,” he said. “We feel pretty lucky to win these lottery slots to get into it. Jim Reis has run multiple marathons and 2014 will be his third Boston. Even without last year’s events, he said he would have been back in the future because of it’s presence in the racing community. Jim said Kate is running her second marathon, first in Boston. “I’ve ran New York City and some others. It’s the best organized, the fans are better,” Reis said. “New York City wasn’t as exciting as Boston. Boston is just more organized more fun, more screaming, more excitement, more history. Bib No. It’s been 30 years since Silverman last ran from Hopkinton to Copley Square, but he hasn’t departed from the sport. “It’s been a long time and I’m running there this year because of what happened last year and in runner solitude,” Silverman said. “And to celebrate Boston, it’s a great city. After running a marathon or two a year since his last Boston Marathon, Silverman is as ready as ever to return. He qualified at the Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Marathon, finishing in 4:02:00. He finds marathoning and the Boston race infatuating because of its history and would hate to have last year’s events tarnish its dignity. “The history, the fact it goes back to 1897 and that fact that it was the epitome of amateur athletics,” Silverman said. “People just doing it because they love it. Bib No. Since she started running, Jenkins, 34, has increased her racing mileage. On a whim, she applied and was accepted as a charity runner for her employer, Perkins School for the Blind, in Watertown. Last year’s Marathon was her first ever. She’d just passed her family and friends in Wellesley when the bombings forced her to stop at mile 19 in Newton. As word of the catastrophe spread along the course, Jenkins didn’t know what to do. She wanted to keep running, but at the next medical check point, a volunteer forced her and others to stop. An iliotibial (IT) band injury had caused her to carry her cell phone incase of emergency. After she stopped, her aunt in California got through and told Jenkins what happened. Jenkins later reconnected with friends and went to grab something to eat. With Jenkins still in her marathon garb, she drew a lot of questions at the restaurant as news aired on the TVs. It was then that everything sunk in and she was overwhelmed with emotions. “At first I was doing it to just run a marathon and doing it for Perkins, but then it meant more to me,” Jenkins said. Crossing and being handed the medal was going to be a big moment, said Jenkins, who battled through knee injuries, mental challenges and fundraising. Jenkins has another IT band injury, but is ready to finish what she started last year. As a nurse at the Perkins School, her charity hits close to home. “Perkins just has this kind of draw,” she said. “The staff are amazing in what they do everyday. The kids, you get so close to them and build relationships with them. They are the reason that everyone is there. I feel kind of selfish because I get so much out of my job from them. Jenkins grew up in Northampton and graduated from Northampton High School in 1997. The Waltham resident lives close enough to the course to train on it. One run took her along the part she has yet to run, leaving only the final steps uncovered. “I wanted to save crossing the finish line for Monday,” she said. “I’m ready to have some happy memories and tears of joy instead of the tears of sadness. Bib No. Rounds, 43, qualified at the 2012 Hartford Marathon and circled April 21, 2014 on his calendar. “It’s big on my mind,” Rounds said. “I was going to run the marathon whether that happened or not. Rounds started running at 17 while on a trip to Greece, where he ran his first marathon — the original from Athens to Marathon. “I wasn’t going to have another chance,” he said. A 20-plus year hiatus ensued until his sister suggested they use running as a bonding tool. The suggestion gave him a new hobby. “For me, the training is very satisfying,” he said. “They always talk about how you train for hundreds of miles, I can’t remember how far I’ve run. The family bond has stuck too, so much that he hasn’t made a point to tell anyone besides those that live under his roof he’s running because he doesn’t want to draw attention to it. “They feel obligated to come, and quiet frankly they get bored. I don’t feel like making them do that,” Rounds said. Bib No. Because of last year’s tragedy, Duda, 59, decided to lace up his shoes and run this year on behalf of Credit Unions Kids at Heart. It will be his first marathon. Through the charity, which benefits Boston Children’s Hospital, Duda has been given patient partners for motivation. Lianna, Mia and Hannah Morrison have all received life-saving treatment and continual care from the hospital. “One of the things that has just been amazing, are the runners because most of them have very personal connections to the hospital,” Duda said. “I’ve got this wonderful chance to be hanging out with the top one percent of humanity. Duda’s mission is to raise money for the hospital, but choosing to do it as part of the Boston Marathon was directly related to last year. After the bombings, he felt he had to do something. “I’m sort of angry about it and want to make a statement,” Duda said. “I don’t think I really had (thought about running a marathon) until the bombing. ... There are a lot of runners that feel that way. His charity group has trained on the course. One weekend, a bunch of charity running groups set out on the course for one of the final long runs and to his surprise, spectators were out with signs and water. “You get the sense that there really is a community that is pulling behind the marathon this year and you combine that with the kids that I’m running for and it’s really special,” he said. Bib No. The most daunting thing about the 2014 Boston Marathon for Fairbanks, 25, is that she has never ran 26.2 miles, and that’s not without trying. She was stopped last year while running for WALK Boston. She’s back this year, running as a deferred runner and looking forward to finishing her second marathon. “I’m just really excited,” Fairbanks said. “I’m a little bit nervous, not because something could happen, but because I’ve never actually finished a marathon. Fairbanks picked up running 5-kilometer races in college and given the opportunity to run Boston last year, it escalated to marathon distance. Having the partial experience from last year has been encouraging in training. “I’ve ran a lot of races before ... Boston is it’s own race,” Fairbanks said. “It’s unbelievable how much support there is. They are just helping you get through 26.2 miles ... You have over 100,000 friends that day.
